What College Taught Me
Phoenix

Being in college has positive and negative impacts whether this is financial, mentally and emotionally. I want to share with you the attributes resulting from being in college.

  1. Balance: In college, I am focused on my study, mainly because this is the reason I am in college. Calling my parents and siblings is one way I eliminate stress and balance relationships in my life. I also participate in physical activity such as running, swimming and playing racquetball with friends. Becoming balanced with school, work, family and social life is critical and vital for university students because of everyday situations academically and emotionally.
  2. Friends: I have been introduced to many people, different ethnicities, and wonderful people that, alone, college has brought into my life. I have learned that everyone was not raised the same. I was raised in a strict household in which I was not allowed to go anywhere but school. With this, some of my coworkers and friends were brought up in households in which they could participate in certain activities with friends and, in general, ‘free’. This was hard for me to understand while in college because I was not raised to do whatever I wanted. Also, many of my friends do talk to their parents in a way they want, but, I had to understand that not everyone was raised the same as I was. College friends taught me not to have high expectations in a person.
  3. Parties: College parties are not as I expected. This is probably because I could not attend parties throughout my middle and high school career. Parties in college are not for me. Drugs and alcohol are the main trends, which is an activity I would never participate in. College parties taught me to never give into the ‘trend’ whether it is drugs or alcohol and be true to oneself, always. And nothing good happens after 2 am.
  4. Money: I will have to pay many loans six months after college, a choice that I made myself. There are many finances in college, being groceries, club yearly dues, etc. College has taught me to save, save and save more.
  5. Skills: Interacting with individuals of different cultures and professors helped me develop many of the skills needed for my future career in the law field. Communication, interpersonal, critical thinking and many other skills would not have been possible if college didn't teach me this.
  6. College: I was raised to never take anything for granted, college being one of the many. College taught me to never take being here for granted. Many do not receive the opportunity to enter university immediately after high school or, at all. This opportunity was a blessing and I would be selfish if I mis-used it, because, someone wish they could have the opportunity I was given.
  7. Determination: College taught me to never give up. On my dreams and on myself. I will always have determination and motivation to continue to get a higher education, for myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
