Incoming Freshman Interview: Isa Jauregui

I reached out to the incoming class of 2024 to answer some questions as they prepare for their first semester on campus at University of Hawaii at Manoa. I asked them a few questions about how they are feelings, who they are, and what their plans at our school will be. Here are the responses I got from Isa Jauregui.

1. Who are you? Where are you from? Interests/hobbies? Just introduce yourself!

Hello, my name is Isa Jauregui and I am from California, but have spent most of my life in Texas. I have been a vegetarian for half of my life and I love animals. Some of my hobbies include singing, taking photos, and hiking. Another thing I love to do is give back to the community. I was the Vice President of my school's National Honors Society where I had spent numerous hours dedicated to different service events. Before COVID-19, I would actively spend my weekends at the animal shelter walking and playing with the animals, trying to encourage adoption. I also love to swim and have worked as a lifeguard for some time.

2. Why did you pick University of Hawaii at Manoa?

When doing my research on which schools to apply to, UH stood out to me because of its great marine biology program and beautiful campus. I have never been to Hawaii before, but I can tell from the photos alone that I will love it. This school has been a top contender in my list for a while, and I am extremely happy to start my first semester this fall. On top of that, UH had offered me a scholarship that would help me tremendously.

3. What is your major? Why'd you pick that as your major?

My major is Marine Biology, and I chose it because of my fascination with the ocean. Living in California, I would spend most of my time at the beach or at the aquarium, admiring all the unique animals. The majority of our Earth is the ocean and most of that hasn't even been discovered yet. I would love to help conserve the ocean and discover the unknown in my future.

4. What are you the most excited for?

I am extremely excited to finally go to Hawaii for the first time and get to learn more about the culture and explore the island. I am also excited to meet new people and get the opportunity to attend such an amazing school. Attending UHM is a great opportunity that I am extremely grateful for.

5. What are you the most nervous for?

While I am excited to live on a new island, I am also nervous. Like I've mentioned, I have never been to Hawaii before, and I don't know what to expect when I get there. I don't know many people out there, but I am sure I am going to make a lot of friends. Adjusting to the island life will be difficult, but I am confident that I will be fine!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
