For most high school students, school is often full of long, boring and tedious tasks. However, in the long run, they know that if there is a specific job that they want to do, they must know that this requires additional schooling. I’ll be the first to admit that when I was in high school I thought this same thing. However, now that I am entering my third year in college, I now know better how education is important in order to help me to not only benefit myself but others as well. Although college is not for everyone, those who are not enrolled should not discourage others not to attend. Parents should always encourage their children to try hard and pursue them to go to school in order to get further along in life.
Although neither my father nor my mother attended college, this was always something that I wanted to get involved in. As a first generation college student, the admission and application process was often a long and difficult one; however, I never gave up. When I was a senior in high school, I made sure to crack down on my grades in order to make sure that I would get into a good college.
Even though college is not for everyone, there are a few alternatives for students who do not want to go through more schooling. These alternatives include skill training and military enlistment, these are types of jobs which people can get involved in right after they finish high school. However, the difference between getting a job right away and getting a job after college is that a college degree can help to move up further in a job position. The future progression of education can cause the job market to favor college degrees. College degrees show that a person has received more schooling and that they know what they’re doing. As well as saying that the person is passionate about their career/job, have chosen to work hard in order to prove it, and have the credentials to back this up. Although this is true about having a degree, I am not trying to put down those who don’t have one. In fact, some people can’t go to college because of financial difficulties as well as family issues which prevent them from continuing their schooling. However, if people have the chance, they should at least consider the idea of college.
For people that do not believe that they are cut out for college, they have two options, they are skill training and military. Skill training consists of knowing the basic skills such as typing, filing, communication, reading, writing, basic math skills as well as being able to make phone calls. Jobs that require skill training do not require a college degree because they are skills that can be learned without attending college/university. Some skill training jobs are grocery workers, retail jobs, receptionists, comedians, carpenters, mechanics, insurance agents, plumbers, office assistants, tax collectors, hair stylists, food services as well as electricians. Although some of those jobs are not basic skills, they’re skills which can be taught/learned.
Since these jobs don’t require a degree, anyone can apply for them. As well as there not being a process other than the physical application. Because these jobs do not require college degrees, there is no additional money coming out a person’s pocket; like college tuition, books, or room & board as well as no additional schooling. Besides the direction of skill training, there is another alternative, the military. Joining the military offers additional education, jobs as well as a chance to help those around you. It includes tax-free housing, a chance to travel, meet people of your similar interests, pride/honor in serving one’s country and health/dental care for you and your family. It is the social norm that people are going to college to get a piece of paper that says that they are more qualified. When people realize that jobs are looking towards those with college degrees, they will consider going to college themselves. Most colleges offer internships, these can help a person to go out into their field and experience it for themselves. These are great learning opportunities which allow for a person to decide if they are headed down the path that they want to for their future job/career. College offers a person more options and ways in which they can create a stable future for themselves.
Although skill training helps to get a person a job right away, this does not mean that this is what they want to do all their lives. Most people want to do something which will make them happy as well as make them money. College offers job security, money/promotions, benefits (medical), satisfaction with one’s self, career opportunities, a better future as well as proof that they have the dedication and more education which can prove that they do care about what they are doing.
