College classes are whole new game where as Darwin put it, it’s survival of the fittest. You’re in a fast paced environment where only the strong survive, so these are reasons why you have to bulk up your academic muscles:
1. You actually have to read the textbook
By reading the textbook, I mean actually READ it. You have to be able to actually remember this content so you’re familiar with it by the time lecture rolls around. For me, this involves taking detailed notes and highlighting the book.
2. You have to take the initiative
Your professors will care to an extent if you fail, but otherwise you’re on your own. As an athlete I’m required to go to office hours during midterms and get praised and or criticized on my work ethic throughout the semester. Its great because they give suggestions and offer help, but only if you actually make the effort to communicate with them.
3. Tests are actually a really big deal
Passing a midterm can literally make or break you. One low test grade and suddenly, you may have to drop a class. Sometimes that class isn’t offered till the next year and will put you two years behind to graduate, so sometimes a failed midterm can force you to change your major. Don’t wing any tests.
4. + and - matter
Unlike high school these grade markings are no longer just for show. These make a huge difference in your GPA and can make or break you if you try to get into graduate school.
5. The library is your 2nd home
There’s no way you’ll get any work done in your dorm if you’re trying to study while there’s a pregame going on across the hall. The library is a productive environment where you’re literally forced to work, so why not take advantage of it? If it’s not really your thing, local coffee shops and the student center are also great places to get work done.
