Dubbed “the greatest city in the world” by "Hamilton’s" Angelica Schuyler, it’s no wonder more than half a million college students choose to call New York City home. With each of the five boroughs offering unique food, entertainment and cultural experiences, there’s really never a dull moment for students in the city. Granted, not everyone craves such a fast-paced lifestyle paired with the intensity of a college workload, but for many, leaving for college is all about independence and adventure-seeking, making New York a perfect destination.
For one, even the pickiest of eaters shouldn’t struggle to find amazing food. Where campus food lacks, New York City restaurants, specialty shops and even food trucks make up. While Arthur Avenue in the Bronx boasts some of the best Italian food outside of Italy, Molly’s Cupcakes, Holey Cream and Black Tap serve the city’s most outrageous desserts. Going to school in the Big Apple certainly lends itself to all sorts of food-related adventures.
Probably the most exciting part of studying in the city is the ability to walk from place to place rather than relying on a car to travel. Combined with using public transportation, walking from one place to another is such a convenience, especially coming from a fairly typical suburban hometown in which cars were practically the only available mode of transportation. Being able to rely on the subway and travel by foot is the perfect addition to the college experience.
With that being said, numerous forms of entertainment are well within reach for city students with a bit of free time. Broadway, of course, is a favorite when it comes to nights away from studying. Lotteries, rush tickets and standing room options have made show-seeing much more affordable for the “broke” college student. Many off-Broadway and independent theaters also offer amazing performances, not to mention Lincoln Center and Radio City Music Hall. Even comedy clubs have proven to be popular entertainment spots among college students. Plus, television show tapings and plenty of concerts make for great city adventures. And with museums on nearly every corner, it almost feels impossible to cover every sight of the city in only four short years.
One of Fordham’s many mottos reads: “New York is my campus, Fordham is my school,” and I really hope to embody it to the fullest during my time in the city.
