As the new year starts off, we must brace ourselves for the harsh winter weather that lies ahead. It’s certainly no time for outdoor activities — these icy temperatures are much better suited for blankets and hot chocolate, a combination rivaled only by the winter break dream team: rainy days and crime shows. Here are five dangerous programs to keep you occupied.
1. Twin Peaks (2 seasons, 38 episodes)
The series’ events revolve around solving the murder of a small-town homecoming queen and the complicated lives of the locals. The show is known for its off-beat humor and unusual cast of characters. It’s not afraid to get a little weird, and it never takes itself too seriously, which is unexpected, to say the least, in a show about a serial killer.
2. Blue Velvet (2 hours)
Another small town, another baffling murder case. Confession: I have not actually watched this one, but it’s been on my list for about three years. It has the same producer and starring actor as "Twin Peaks," so I figure it’s worth a try. The plotline isn’t all too different, but it seems to be a little creepier and a bit more grown-up.
3. Daredevil (1 season, 13 episodes)
This Netflix original series explores the backstory of Matthew Murdock, also known as Daredevil. It’s not exactly a mystery, since the characters know who’s causing trouble, but Murdock's determined to make sure that justice is served. He may be a lawyer, but this vigilante doesn’t like to play by the rules.
4. Jessica Jones (1 season, 13 episodes)
Okay, yes, it’s another Marvel and Netflix series about a rebellious New Yorker fighting a sociopathic killer, except this one can fly. Kind of. As honest as it is outrageous, this series will not disappoint.
5. How to Get Away with Murder (2 seasons, 24 episodes)
A group of naïve law school students land a coveted internship with their professor while she’s working on a murder trial, only to become hopelessly entangled in the case themselves. If you somehow haven’t hopped on the bandwagon by now, this is a good time to do so. This series has just about everything you could hope for: mystery, drama, action, and even comedy (in an odd and terrifying sort of way).
Hopefully, these mysteries appeal to your inner detective — happy investigating!
