Coker Will Always Have A Place In My Heart

Coker College: My Second Home

Coker Will Always Have A Place In My Heart
Coker College

I remember the day like it was yesterday. The day I was sitting in a high school classroom in Zoology class looking up colleges with no application fees. I stumbled across Coker College by accident. I took the online tour and immediately fell in love.

I decided that I would go ahead and apply because hey, it was free, so why not?! I looked at the acceptance rate and thought I would never get in, so I might as well not get my hopes up. I was wrong. So wrong.

It was January 19th, 2015 when I got my acceptance letter in the mail and I actually cried because I never pictured myself getting into such a prestigious college. I immediately paid the deposit fee before even touring the campus in person because I just knew that Coker College was where I belonged. You know that saying, "Don't regret your past because it was exactly what you wanted at some point." That is about where I am now.

I went and toured Coker College on my birthday, February 27th, and that is when I knew I made the best decision of my life. As time went on, I was back and forth on if I really wanted to go two hours away to college, but at the same time, I was really excited for a change of scenery.

I remember how excited I was to take my placement tests and make my schedule and officially be a Coker Cobra! I love Coker so much! It was my first college experience and the first time I got to leave home for a few months at a time.

I moved into Coker on August 15th, 2015 and I immediately felt like I was home. Before I moved to Myrtle Beach, I lived in a tiny town in Pennsylvania and Hartsville, Coker College's town, is also a pretty tiny town and that is why I felt like I belonged there.

I made a lot of new friends at Coker and had a ton of once-in-a-lifetime experiences there and I would not trade it for the world. I admit I am really going to miss walking around campus and having everyone greet me with a hand wave and a smile. It is always a good day to be a Cobra.

A few last words before I end this article: I will not be attending Coker College in the fall or ever again for that matter because I learned that I belong at a technical college instead. Trust me when I say this: I miss Coker with all of my heart. Coker was my home away from home and I know that I will always hold a place there, but some things just aren't meant to be. Thank you for being my home away from home, Coker College. I will miss you. Just like they always say: Once A Cobra...Always A Cobra.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
