Weekend one of Coachella has come to a close and if you were lucky enough to go this year, you know that it breezed by in a gust of hot desert wind. Between social scene pool parties, diverse arrays of live music performances and, of course, the popular Coachella after parties, there is barely time for sleep. If you’re like me however, you spent every painful hour of this weekend feverishly checking all forms of social media and live streaming every set to catch a glimpse into the uninhibited, private world of Coachella. This famous, and celebrity-infested, mainstream music festival has single-handedly high-jacked spring fashion and turned it into the well-known festival season. This has caused fashion retailers from fast fashion to designer brands to switch up their marketing strategies and design to cater specifically to the Californian festival-goer. To get an idea of the newest festival season trends, we’ll take a look at what some of the known Coachella participating celebrities and fashion bloggers wore this past weekend.
1. Trend: Elaborate Sheer Dresses
Seen on celebs such as Kendall Jenner, Jamie Chung and many more, these pretty, see-through dresses range from mini, to midi, to maxi length and all look gorgeous, as long as the undergarments are doing their jobs!
2. Trend: Festival Hair
Hair was worn all types of ways this year, but most chose to go with a playful, feminine look…minus the flower crown. Taylor Swift took the opportunity to debut her “new look,” which Anna Wintour constructed for Taylor Swift’s Vogue cover shoot. Her platinum blonde bob is clearly a radically different look then her slightly dull regular blonde bob, okay? Bella Thorne went all out with a bright sugarplum purple wig. Kendall Jenner and Katy Perry were among the trendy stars who dared to style their hair in double top-knots. And of course, the other Jenner sister, Kylie stunned in a pastel rainbow wig that she wore in long French-braided pigtails on day two.
3. Trend: Off-The-Shoulder Smock
Fashion blogger and Song sister Dani Song wears a black ruffled crop top with patterned linen shorts and a bandana. Straight from the ZOE-asis, celebrity stylist and fashion mogul Rachel Zoe wears a flowing all-over patterned maxi dress with an off-shoulder draped sleeve.
4. Trend: The Denim Uniform
Many kept it simple with denim cutoffs and a crop top like supermodels, Jourdan Dunn and Gigi Hadid. This can be styled a million ways, so it is perfect to throw on and add statement necklaces, dress up with strappy sandals, or give it some edge with boots or sneakers. Some even wore overalls, like Vanessa Hudgens, the queen of Coachella herself. For a more committed denim look, Bella Hadid and boyfriend The Weeknd, wore head to toe denim, although I’m sure they were quite comfortable in the land of the VIPs and performers.
5. Trend: Two-Toned Tandem
Noticed especially among performers this weekend was the two-toned trend. It’s as if ombré and color-blocking collided into a seriously cool, edgy look. Kim, of the band Matt & Kim, wore a mesh tank and jeans with one red leg and one black leg. Ellie Goulding mixed tones in her layering bomber jacket. Sia, ever the visionary, updated her usual platinum blonde wig to an oversized mask in a collision of black and white adorned with a giant bow to complement her ethereal white dress; her dancing visualization, Maddie Ziegler, wore in an identical wig with a simple nude leotard, which focused on the movement and synced up the whole performance.
6. Trend: Fur Slides
An odd choice for the desert, but a big trend for Coachella this year is the fur slipper slide sandal. It was seen on many celebrities, such as Katy Perry, Kylie Jenner and Sophia Ritchie. Rihanna has been a major contributor to this trend, having recently launched her slide for the Fenty X Puma collection.
As you can see, none of these trends are new, rather they are updated versions of Coachellas' past. It seems that people were ready for an update due to the fact that very few were wearing flower crowns, the former festival staple. Festival season is made for carefree fun and adventure where celebrities and VIPs alike can enjoy the fashion festivities, while everyone else is sweating through their shirts loving every second of watching all of their favorite bands in one place. Coachella brings out everyone's little guilty pleasures, and sometimes wearing a crop top and denim cutoffs or a standout 90s inspired choker is just fun! I'm not about to judge–next year, I hope to be out there with the rest of them in my denim shorts and braided hair celebrating my youth and good music and everything that Coachella stands for. I'll just have to be sure to leave my flower crown behind because it has been declared that that floral accessory is officially dead, sorry Alessandra Ambrosio!
