Closer: A Millennial Anthem

It's more than just a pop song

You've heard it, I've heard it, even your grandma may have heard it. 'Closer' by the Chainsmokers has been blasted out of earbuds, car stereos, and screamed at the top of our lungs since its recent explosion to pop-music stardom. One thing you might ask is what exactly makes this song so appealing. To me, this song is more than just a jam to listen to while driving with your friends, it can relate to so many millennials on different levels.

All of us have those people that come in to our lives and seem to cause your world to turn upside down. "I was doing just fine before I met you", but ever since that certain person came in to your life, things have changed. Sometimes things change for the better, but other times more bad than good seems to come out of the situation. Regardless, that person is put in your life for a reason, teaching you lessons all along the way.

Basically the whole 'we ain't ever getting older' theme is telling us to just live in the moment, to make irrational decisions and just do what makes us happy without worrying about what will happen. Driving around in cars, specifically Range Rovers, and living lavish lifestyles that we typically don't have the means to live is just part of growing up and living life to the fullest. It is totally alright to make mistakes, everyone does it, and eventually learn from them all.

The lyrics regarding the '4 years no call, but now you're lookin' pretty in a hotel bar' thing? Yep, #relatable. Those flings that never quite turn in to a relationship and end for one reason or another but is then rekindled by a chance encounter can be all too real. All of a sudden, past feelings come back and it makes you "forget just why I left you" and embrace the moment.

Many of us are starting to experience the struggles of moving out on our own and trying to adjust to a new life. New city, new job, new lifestyle. A lot of millennials are going through this part in their lives, so we can relate to the story that the lyrics of the song are telling us.

Basically, we all just have to embrace the fact that we are not going to have it all together right now, and still probably not for a while. Just live life to the absolute fullest while we are still young and make memories that we can carry with us for a long time. If you look at the big picture, 'Closer' is a song that can relate to a lot of us in so many ways, and reminds us that "we ain't ever getting older."

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
