The possible 2016 Clinton vs. Bush general election will probably look little like the 1992 Clinton V. Bush election. Although the names are the same, in the past 24 years, a lot has changed regarding the issues at the forefront and the general political atmosphere in the United States. Also, social media is continually growing to play a bigger role in these elections. Here is everything you need to know about how this election will be com are to the Clinton V. Bush election in 1992.
Similarities:
1. Hillary Clinton is running as a centrist democrat
Her campaign also focuses on appealing to young millennials. This is the same platform Bill ran in 1992.
2. Jeb Bush is like his brother George W. and father George H. W., in the fact that they are all moderate Republicans
That trait seems to run in the family.
Differences:As we could expect there are a lot of differences, considering 24 years has passed and Jeb and Hillary are a bit different than their family members.
1. The economy is completely different
During 1992, the economy was in a recession. George Bush led his previous campaign with the “read my lips: no new taxes” campaign. Unfortunately with the raising deficit in his term, he issued a tax hike. This hurt him tremendously in the next election. Bill Clinton offered more promise for the economy at the time. Currently, the economy is looking a lot better. The deficit is still high in the United States, however the economic policy will not be the sole main focus of the 2016 election.
2. In 1992 there was an incumbent president (George H. W. Bush) that was challenged in the Republican primary
It does not happen every election that incumbents are challenged within their own party. However, in this election George H. Bush was challenged by Pat Buchanan. In this election the Republican party was not united with one candidate which contributed to the loss of George H. W. Bush in 1992.3. There is no strong third party candidate in this election
In the 1992 election, Ross Perot was a strong 3rd party candidate. His run for president as an independent was intended to sway votes away from Bush. However in 2016, there doesn't look to be any strong independent candidates.4. The electoral map now looks different
This is the electoral map from the 1992 election. After Bill Clinton's presidency, the electoral map has changed to become mainly red in the south and mid-west but blue on the east and west coasts. It's highly doubtful that the electoral college map will look like this for the 2016 election.
5. Foreign policy matters a lot more than it did in '92.
Although George H. W. Bush tried to play up his military successes as part of his campaign, the public was not that impressed. Foreign policy wasn't as important after the Gulf and Cold Wars had ended. During this era, there was even some peace in the Middle East.
6. This is the first election where debt free college is a campaign issue
College tuition has been constantly on the rise. However, politicians have never debated this as a main issue during presidential campaigns. Obama didn't even go this far, only committing to achieve free tuition for community college. In 2016, debt-free college for pubic institutions is being politically debated.7. Jeb Bush is committed to appealing to the Latino vote
Although, other members of his family have done well with the Latino vote, Jeb Bush has a Latino wife and appeals to Latino issues. He's from Florida and he speaks Spanish. He even identifies as Hispanic. (In this picture Jeb Bush identified as Latino on voter registration because he is a small percentage Latino himself.)8. As of now, there are no Clinton scandals
This pretty much says it all.
9. Hillary Clinton could be the first woman presidentObviously, this would make history. Clinton may have won in '92, but who knows if Clinton or Bush will win the presidency for 2016.
