The new Netflix Original Series, “Stranger Things,” is everything we love about 80’s pop-culture.
5. Stand By Me (1986)
Every element of this drama is lovable. It is another coming-of-age, back in time, flick, but so much more than that. It's affectionate, funny, and strong... Odds that you can fight back the tears? Slim.
Stranger Things 100 percent pays homage to Stand By Me. Both stories have friends searching for someone in a small town, and perfectly characterizes pre-teen/teenage boys. In Stranger Things, it is one of their missing companions, but nonetheless, the two cinematic journeys feature adventurous and eccentric adolescents who wind up in risky situations.
The resurge of old film eras is so great because it makes everyone feel younger and reminisce. We see what made those older movies special, now, in a present production, and are reminded as to why we liked those movies in the first place.
Thank you screenwriters and directors who work everyday to entertain us in new creative ways. (Shout out to my brother, Nick Funess, working toward becoming a horror-film screenwriter!)
Honorable Mentions
1. The Thing (1982)
2. Alien (1979)
3. The X-Files (Series, 1993)
Two creepy fantasy/thrillers that are fan favorites and an incredible supernatural series with similarities throughout. The X-Files isn't from the 80's, but it definitely deserves to be mentioned as an inspiration for Stranger Things.
