The first big summer blockbuster is here with "Captain America: Civil War" and what a great flick to start the season off with. Without delving too deep into spoiler territory, "Civil War" focuses on Steve Rodgers, or more commonly known by his superhero alias, Captain America, along with his struggle of choosing between sticking up for his war buddy, Bucky Barnes, or staying with the newly government-regulated Avengers. “Avengers: Civil War” would have been a more appropriate title for this film as Marvel pulls all the strings and features most of the superheroes found in their film franchise. Marvel even introduces a new face, that of Spider-Man, who is excellently played by the young Tom Holland. As I previously stated, Marvel isn’t holding back with a number of cameos and superheroes to be found in the film. I feel that a number of superheroes may actually be a bit overwhelming for those who aren’t well acquainted with the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), but as a fan of all-things superheroes, I absolutely loved it.
That’s not to say that I found the film flawless. There are definitely plot holes I found in the story that I would like to discuss but will choose to avoid in an effort to keep this review as spoiler-free as possible. Other than the few plot holes I found, the other biggest issue I have with the movie is something that I didn’t have but can see others having who aren’t as savvy with the subject matter. With a movie that has so many superheroes and relies so heavily on previous knowledge of the relationships between the different heroes, I think it is essential to have seen most of the other Marvel movies to fully appreciate "Civil War."
I spoke of the introduction of Spider-Man and would like to touch upon the excellent performance that Tom Holland provided. Out of all of the Peter Parkers (Spider-Man) that have been seen on the silver screen, Holland seems to understand what makes Spider-Man, Spider-Man. All previous renditions of Spider-Man tried to make the character too serious, but Holland understands that Parker is a nerdy high-schooler that is still trying to figure out this whole superhero thing. Holland constantly had me laughing with his dumb, but yet funny one-liners that spewed from his mouth. His performance was one of my favorite parts of the film and that’s not just because I’m a "Spidey" fan-boy.
When all is said and done, "Captain America: Civil War" is a well-made superhero movie. It may have a dodgy story at times, but it does give a good enough reason to watch a group of man gods fights each other. I give "Captain America: Civil War" an A-.
