Religion is always hard to talk about. You have your peers that have a religion and they try their best to abide by the rules and you have your extremists that like to shove down your throat that one bad decision will send you straight to hell.
And I’m not for that.
I’m especially not for those who believe that their religion is any better than anybody else’s for whatever particular reason.
America has a habit of doing that.
I am a Black American, a soon to be college grad, a sister.
And I am also Christian.
I grew up with mostly Christians (Obviously) but I have grown up with a few kids in school that are Jewish and there were those who were Muslim.
It wasn’t until I went off to College where I ran into a Buddhist, Hinduist or someone who didn’t believe in God at all.
I thought it was pretty cool.
But I’ve always been an open minded person. I get curious, I want to learn more about your culture why you do the things you do, what’s the back story behind it. I think it’s important to be educated of other religions; out of respect for them, not necessarily having to adopt any one’s cultural ideas. Stereotyping sucks, it’s mean and we all do it, whether we notice it or not.
At twenty years old I’m old enough to know that just because someone reads the Qur’an over the Bible it doesn’t mean they’re any less of a person than I am.
I live in a country where it’s okay to claim that a whole non-Christian religion (primarily Muslim) could be labeled as terrorists but as soon as someone wants to put the blame on Christians for a heinous crime all hell breaks loose. I’m not saying we can’t defend ourselves I’m saying we shouldn’t be surprised if some other religious base wants to defends theirs.
We don’t even realize the half of what we get away with in this country.
Religious Privilege in Christianity is real.
For those of you who don't really know how religious privilege works:
Christian privilege is the variety of benefits bestowed upon Christians whether in businesses, school or any social environment. This system arises out of the presumption that the belief in Christianity is a social norm, leading to the discrimination, fear and high probability of violence towards anyone nonreligious or a follower of another religion.
Yes, our country was founded by devotedly Christian men and we even had a pledge to say in school to honor our forefathers:
“I pledge allegiance,
To the flag,
Of the United States of America,
And to the Republic,
For which it stands,
One Nation,
Under God
Indivisible, with liberty and justice
For All.
But wait, read that last sentence… for all?
Wouldn’t that include: The Jews, the Muslims, Buddhist, Hindus as well as the Christians?
It was kind of like one of those things you don’t realize until someone else says.
And of course someone will argue this would not apply to everyone that doesn’t worship God. Why not? They're still people. People who use Yahweh, Allah, Buddha or any polytheistic figure instead of using God.
That really scares the hell out of you people.
We don’t want to admit that Christianity has a religious privilege over every other religion:
- No one’s going to jump us for praying to Jesus
- People aren’t going to slash our tires and smash our windows for having a FISH bumper sticker
- We can go to any country in the world and have our religion understood by a majority
- Customer’s aren’t going to get upset in a grocery/retail store because you said “Merry Christmas” instead of “Happy Holidays”
- Television always give us a positive image
America still has a long way to go with Religious Tolerance. Criminal History has given our nation a twisted sense of different religions blinding the ignorant practices within our own.
Christianity is a loving community, lacking of judgement and should be absolutely tolerant of other religions. People have other ideas of who their divine savior is, and that’s okay. No harm is being done to you if someone you know isn’t Christian. Believe what you want to believe. And please, stop blaming other religions for the devastating mass violence in this country.
Christians know how to use guns too and committed the same crimes. The act of violence is all in the morality and free will of the individual. Not their religion.
“Make a habit of shutting down conversations that will tear others down.”
This was just something I've been thinking about lately. I can go on and on about this.
You don't have to agree with me.
Just Imagine what life would be like if Christianity wasn't the world's largest religion and Anti-Christianity was widespread in America.
