On May 5, 2015, Chris Stapleton, a prominent and longtime Nashville songwriter, released his first smashing first solo album, "Traveller." And while the album's incredible success is certainly a positive note, the inspiration for the album comes from a dark period in Stapleton's life, the death of his father in 2013.
Following the death, Morgane Stapleton, Chris's wife, saw a much needed moment for clarity and change and decided to purchase a 1979 Jeep Cherokee. The decision would lead to a humorous tale of traversing the country, an inch from breaking down for good, but would ultimately, and most importantly, serve as the catalyst for the album. With inspiration and drive, Stapleton sought out legendary producer, Dave Cobb, famous for working with the likes of Sturgill Simpson, Shooter Jennings, Anderson East, and many more. Cobb not only had the experience to harness Stapleton's unique sound but the vision and talent to capture his soul.
The partnership would turn out to be the perfect fusion and culminated in the 14 track masterpiece, "Traveller." A few months later, Stapleton would join Justin Timberlake on the CMA stage to perform "Tennessee Whiskey" and "Drink You Away." The duo would enthrall audiences around the world and attract even more attention to Stapleton's vintage, booming country sound. The performance can be seen below:
What Stapleton has created is more than just another country album. "Traveller" harkens back to the roots of country music and pays tribute to the days of outlaw country and artists like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Hank Williams Jr. and Merle Haggard. Not to mention the incredible partnership of Chris and Morgane Stapleton, reminding many of the days of Johnny Cash and June Carter. With "Traveller," Stapleton abandons the pop-country trend of today, incorporating heavy, driving guitar and compelling lyrics. Even more encouraging is the reception Stapleton has got since releasing his first solo album. People have embraced Stapleton's music, propelling his album to sell 1 million copies in the United States and earning him several awards in the past year, including two Grammys. Fans can also be pleased in knowing Cobb and Stapleton have teamed up once again for Cobb's newest project, "Southern Family;" a concept album showcasing the talents of some of country music's biggest names. Stapleton has effectively changed the game, revitalizing country music and challenging artists to compete with his nostalgic tone. With listeners begging for more, there is no doubt the singer-songwriter is here to stay and looking to continue his incredible success.
