Why I Chose Writing as my College Major

When it comes to picking a major, the level of challenge varies from student to student. For some college students, they are unsure and take some time to really think through what they want for careers in their future. For others, picking a major feels predetermined based on their previous experiences in their lives. I am a student who fits into the latter category, as I decided my major by the time I began filling out my college applications. The major I chose was in the English field of study, with a focus on creative writing. When I reflect on my earlier days, I realize that the writing career path is something I wish to follow in my foreseeable future. For a variety of reasons, creative writing is the best choice for my college major.

As early as elementary and middle school, I always enjoyed free writing time. Free writing was when students were giving a time limit and allowed to write about anything they wanted. I have always had such an active imagination, so it was very enjoyable for me to come up with as many ideas as I could. I enjoyed this creative process so much that I would even laugh and smile at the more wild and silly ideas I would write about from that early age. Additionally, this imagination still resonates with me to this day. For instance, I have recently been writing a short fiction story for a contest, and it has been very fun to put together. Not only have I brainstormed some other ideas that I plan to use in my future career, but it shows how far my writings have truly come. In my younger days, I would have not been able to put my ideas as well put together due to the lack of experience. After all these years of writing, I have become very skilled at articulating the thoughts I connect through my writings. Also, writing gives me a voice that represents my deepest thoughts and spirit.

In social situations, I have many traits that give me an awkward impression for others to see. I have social anxiety, and it is often a struggle to simply ask some one about hanging out. When I am writing though, these social barriers disappear. I feel as though I can finally articulate what I really think about the world around me, and speak in a voice that is my real self. Without the problems of my social anxiety in my way, writing allows me to really communicate to other people what I truly feel. This feeling of limitless expression is what has drawn me to consider writing as a career over the years, as I want to connect better with those around me. In general, writing is a good major for me because it allows me to connect my eternal thoughts with other people in a way I cannot do otherwise. Moreover, the amount of possibilities with what writing can be used for is another reason I chose creative writing as my major.

Although I am concentrating in writing fiction and that kind of stuff, I also enjoy writing in its many other forms. For instance, writing these articles is a very enjoyable and relaxing past time for me. I can simply communicate a particular topic I am thinking about and put it on the internet for all to see. One week I could be typing about why I like a particular movie or series and the next some philosophical piece on how I look at the meaning of life. The amount of freedom that come along with being a writer is very fascinating and can make for a great amount of content for my mind to piece together. In many cases, writing is a really varied field to explore.

At this moment in time, I am quite content with my major being creative writing. The more time I spend taking writing courses, the more my writing improves. Hopefully someday I will be able to write entire novels and stories. I understand that my interests may change and evolve within the next three years or so, but for now writing is a major interest of mine. From the flow of my internal thoughts to the many topics I write about, writing is like a world of artistic spirit for me personally.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
