Now I know a lot of you are probably thinking that water is a strange topic to write about, but I have a lot to say about the subject.
My family and friends will understand exactly what I’m talking about here.
Until about six months ago, all I drank was Coca-Cola – all day, every day. I drank it every single day and sometimes I even drank it for breakfast, lunch and dinner (sorry, Mom). You could say I formed a pretty bad habit.
I never used to like any other beverage. So many people would try to convince me to drink water, but I always hated the taste. I swore that it tasted like nothing, like I was drinking cardboard.
Sure, I’d drink orange juice or iced tea occasionally, but soda was my go-to drink.
I’d heard so many stories and read various articles explaining how awful soda was for your body, but I didn’t really think much of it.
Whenever people would tell me how bad soda is for my health, it would just go right over my head. My excuse was, "I’m young, so I don’t have to worry about my health," and so many young people have that mentality because we feel like we don’t need to worry about it until we’re much, much older.
It wasn’t until a certain someone convinced me to give water a chance and it just kind of stuck. I found myself ordering water when I went out to eat and reaching for a water bottle in the refrigerator rather than grabbing a two-liter bottle of Coke.
I swore that from then on, I would only drink soda on special occasions and now, I don’t even want it at all.
I ordered a Coke while I was at a restaurant about a month ago, because I decided to treat myself. Once I took a sip, however, I was disgusted. It felt like someone poured acid down my throat. I couldn’t even drink the rest of it. All I could think to myself was, "How did I ever drink this stuff?"
So moral of the story, now I don’t even want to drink soda on special occasions. I don’t want to drink it all. I’m perfectly content with drinking water and sometimes having a glass of iced tea or lemonade in the summer months when it’s excruciatingly hot outside.
Even though I still don’t eat the healthiest foods, I’m on the right track. It’s all about baby steps.
