Count The Small Stuff

My blog about Envy was one of my most popular blogs. It has even been used as inspiration by some employers. Do not get me wrong, I adore that so many of you related to this piece. I am thrilled that I got a reaction. That being said I am so sad that so many of you felt something by this piece, because it means so many of you have experienced it.

We are currently in the unforgotten month between the month of all things scary and all things candy cane covered and sparkly. You know the month that we should be thankful. Since envy was so popular, I am beginning to see why being thankful is not trending.

In a world focused on what everyone else has, it is easy to see why we overlook everything we have. In a world where everyone is placing perfectly positioned moments on social media, it easy to see lack of those moments in our lives. But, people are not going to post the hard, the misery and the imperfectness, because then they would have to admit life is not always perfect.

No one’s life is. But we all have perfect parts of our lives that we sometimes forget to be thankful for. Below is my list of things that I am sure so many of us overlook and forget to be Thankful for.

1.) I woke up this morning

2.)My dad’s voice on the other end of the phone

3.)My children are still in my home driving me insane and keeping me sane all at the same time

4.)My husband adores those children in our home as much as I do and sacrifices for them

5.)My best friend has been making me smile and having my back for decades and it’s a relationship that takes decades to build

6.)Friends that share rejoice in my success and help me through my failures

7.)People that love me unconditionally

8.)A huge family that comes with all kinds of experiences

9.)My mom’s memory

10.) Hearts that you trust more than your own

11.) Coffee, coffee, coffee

12.) I can laugh

13.) My cute little puppy

14.) Books that make me feel everything

15.) Words that inspire me

16.) People that inspire me

17.) Sunrises and sunsets

18.) Fuzzy blankets

19.) Chocolate

20.) I can love

21.) Vanilla scented candles

22.) My cheerleaders

23.) Seeing, touching and smelling life

24.) Breeze in my hair

25.) The way grass smells after it rains

26.) Hot baths

27.) The way Hawaiian Tropic smells like vacation in a bottle

28.) Eggnog lattes

29.) A lit Christmas tree in a dark room

30.) Bon fires

31.) The feel of sun kissed skin

32.) Freshly washed hair

33.) Christmas morning

34.) That I can sit here and share this tiny little list to with you

Sit back and make your own list and you will see that there is so much to be thankful for. So stop counting everyone else’s blessings and start counting your own. You will see how fast they add up.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
