Choose To Be Happy In 2017
Shaelynn Kelly

If there is one thing that I have learned this past year, it is that happiness is a choice. It is easy to give up in the face of adversity, to lose optimism, and to wallow in sadness or self-pity when times are tough. It takes immense strength and courage to look at the positive things in life when all is seeming to be crashing down. In 2017, it is my resolution to continue to choose happiness each day.

In 2016, we voted for a buffoon to be our president-elect. When President Obama leaves the White House, a man who has spoken disgracefully about women and minorities will take office. A man who claimed he would “build a wall” to prevent immigrants from finding a new opportunistic life in the United States of America. The low road would be to continue to complain about Donald Trump, to stoop to his level, and choose hate and fear to guide your actions. However, in 2017, it is crucial that we all aim high and come together as one to fight for what we believe in. Never underestimate the differences that can be made when courageous individuals unite for a cause. No matter what the president-elect stands for, continue to be kind to others and to have an open mind about the nation’s future. Remember, "Love trumps all!"

This past year, far too many beautiful souls were taken from this earth. It is difficult to lose the ones that we love. Whether they be in our family, favorite celebrities, or community members, loss is the most difficult thing that we humans have to face. During the grieving period, it is natural and right to feel complete sadness and despair; this process is extremely important. It is just as important to try to focus on the happy times that were spent with the person and to continue to talk about them after they have left this world and passed on to the next. This is what keeps their spirits alive. In 2017, continue to remember those we have lost and continue to keep the ones you love dearly by your side.

As 2017 commences, choose to be happy. Be happy with yourself and your accomplishments that you made over the past twelve months. No matter how big or small these feats might have been, they were important and are something to be proud of. Choose to be happy in your body, no matter its shape or size. If this means exercising more or eating smarter to get your body in a healthier state, then you are capable of doing whatever it takes to get yourself there. Choose to do what makes you happy each day. Whether it be reading a good novel, ordering your favorite takeout, sleeping for five extra minutes in the morning or listening to your favorite song, do whatever it is that will help you fuel your inner fire.

2017 is a clean slate, a fresh start, a new beginning. This is the year to stand for a cause, plan a trip, eliminate hate, and to make yourself your best you. Get excited for what 2017 has to offer!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
