From Chance the Rapper to Fall Out Boy, Chicago has long been the Midwest's mecca for great music. Chicago became prominently known for its jazz and blues music in the 1920s, and from there on music of all sorts have sprouted out of the roots of Chicago. In the '80s and '90s punk and hip hop wriggled their way onto the scene, and those genres are what seem to be primarily coming out of Chicago today. A ton of new artists have been popping up out of the area within the last few years who are definitely making a name for themselves all over the world.
Below are a list of five up and coming artists originating from the Midwest's mecca for music.
1. NoName
Noname, whose actual name is Fatimah Warner, just dropped her mix tape entitled "Telephone" this year. She is a young hip-hop artist from the South-side of Chicago that started out doing slam poetry, but gained popularity through her feature on Chance the Rapper's "Acid Rap." "Telephone" is rapidly gaining popularity with its snappy, catchy beats and smooth rhythmic vocals. Songs like "Diddy Pop" and "All I Need" feature dreamy, almost retro-inspired beats that give Noname a very unique sound that is catching the eye of everyone! Noname is making quite a name for herself.
2. Varsity
Varsity, which is composed of lead singer Stephanie Smith and the band: Dylan Weschler, Patrick Stanton, Spencer Smith and Jake Stolz, originates from the Chicago area and has been kickin' it since 2013 with the release of two singles entitled "Turns Out" and "Downtown." The group sports the best of both worlds with a gritty punk-y style coupled with a "girly" poppy style, which makes for a great balance of sounds. Their popular single released in 2015 called "So Sad, So Sad" got Varsity a lot of attention with its catchy drum beat and lyrics that speak to the inner teenage angst in all of us. With the release of their first full-length self-titled LP late last year, hopefully, Varsity will soon be on your team.
3. Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks is one Chicago band that has really made their mark in the world of punk rock within the last few years. The group is made up of Cadien Lake James, Clay Frankel, Jack Dolan, Colin Croom and Connor Brodner, and these dudes are an extremely lively and creative bunch that have blown up since the release of their first album "Sunken" in 2013. They draw influence from a number of musical styles including '60's style rock and dirty garage punk. Twin Peaks boasts an impressive three LP albums, their most recent one being "Down In Heaven." With their recent completion of their U.S tour and their appearance on "Conan," Twin Peaks is suddenly showing up all over. "Making Breakfast," which is one of their most popular songs from the album entitled "Wild Onion," features an incredibly up-beat vibe and guitar solos that are contagiously hummable. Twin Peaks is definitely the type of band to jam out to with your friends with its fun, almost summery feel that is sure to capture your heart.
4. Post Animal
This Chicago native group is composed of Dalton Allison on bass, Jake Hirshland on both guitar and keys, and Javi Reyes, Joe Keery and Matt Williams all on guitar. The group has gotten a lot of attention for its member, Joe Keery, for his appearence on the popular Netflix series "Stranger Things." Although Post Animal has only been playing as a group of six for a few months, they have ambitiously released two LP albums entitled "Perform the Most Curious Water Activities" and "The Garden Series." Their sound fuses gritty punk and psychedellic rock to create an almost "Tame Impala on crack" kind of feel. Songs like "When I Get Home" from their newest album, "The Garden Series," feature heavy guitar accompanied by synth-y keyboard and melodic, dreamy singing. Post Animal played a Chicago-based show this past August opening for the extremely popular band, The Orwells (who are also Chicago natives), and with their unique sound and lively energy the band is sure to go far in the future.
5. The Walters
The Walters are made of up five hunks: Luke Olson, Walter Kosner, Michael Tirabassi, Danny Wells and Charlie Ekhaus. These guys, while only forming in 2014, have been steadily progressing with the release of two EP's entitled "Songs For Dads" in 2014 and "Young Men" in 2015. The Walters possess a Beach Boys-esque quality that is very sweet and too catchy to ignore. Popular tunes of their's like "I Love You So" and "New Girl (Tom's Song)," which are both off of "Songs For Dads," have an almost nostalgic and friendly quality with harmonic bass lines and sing-songy lyrics that are extremely relatable. The Walters are hitting the road this upcoming November on a mid-west tour ending with a sold out show on their home turf in Chicago along with their personal buds, who also happen to be number four on the list, Post Animal.
