Sometimes people feel like they are stuck in a rut or have a bad mindset. It is easier said than done to get out of but here are 10 things to try when you are in a bad mindset.

1. Meditation

Meditation can help clear the mind and focus your energy on wherever your mind takes you. It can also help calm you down if you are ever in a panic. For some people, meditation can be a good way to calm you down but for it to open your mind it takes practice. It never hurts to try it when you really feel like you need it.

2. Exercising

Whether it is running, lifting or stretching. Exercising can help to either relieve stress or get all your frustrations out. Sometimes when you are in a rut, you want to stay in bed all day. Try and get yourself to at least stretch or take a walk.

3. Write things down

Writing things down can really help. It is a way to get that jumble of thoughts organized. You can write things down in your own way. Whether it is keeping a journal or making lists. Lists of things you want or things you need to remember to do. Sometimes when we are in a bad mindset it is hard to keep things in order which is why writing helps. Also, if you hear a quote or you have an idea, write it down. We are most creative when we are least expecting.

4. Listen to music

Listening to music is something that is a big part of peoples lives. It is something to listen to and inspire too. Music preoccupies us from ourselves but also can inspire us to do live our lives to the fullest. Lyrics can be relatable and can inspire a lot of people. Take some time to listen to your favorite bands and artists.

5. Read a book or watch a movie

Reading a book, watching a movie or television show can help more than people might think. Sometimes when you can't stand reality, escaping it can be helpful. It's okay to be connected to characters and fictional beings because sometimes they are really relatable, after all, they were made up by humans like us.

6. Plan things to look forward to

This doesn't always have to be costly things but if you can, save up some money and go on small vacations. Plan to go hiking or go see a movie. Try to plan little things and so when you are having a rough day, you can think to yourself "I just need to get through this and then I'm doing ____ on the weekend." Think of things YOU want to do and take the chance. Your happiness is important.

7. Talk to people

A lot of people want to hide the fact that they aren't okay and it works for a while but it ends up being lonely. Talking to someone like a family member or a friend you trust can help a lot. If you need to, talk to a professional, but talking about it to anyone can be helpful. It is surprising how many people might know what you are going through.

8. Get a hobby or continue your hobby

Do something you've always wanted to try or already love. Paint, draw or take pictures. Learn how to play an instrument or make crafts. Dance or play a sport. Putting our creativity into something can help the mind. Put whatever is going on in your mind into your hobby.

9. Think of the things that you love

Think of your family and friends. Think of certain moments that made you smile or laugh. The sky or nature can be something you love. A place that you always found beautiful or peaceful. Anything that you love.

10. Focus on yourself

Find yourself because you will remain feeling lost until you do. You can find yourself if you don't focus on it. If you are happy with yourself then that is all that matters but if you aren't happy with yourself then that's what you need to focus on. The key to your happiness is being held by you.

It doesn't hurt to try any of these. It is better than just staying in this mindset or rut. The best thing you can do is to do everything you can to get out of it. Mostly, you need to believe in yourself and believe that you can get through this.

You will get through this. You are stronger than you think.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
