For some reason I seem to be crazy enough to think that I can make a difference in this world. Maybe it's because my whole life growing up my parents told me I can be anything that I wanted to be and could do anything that I set my mind to. I have always had a heart for people who were treated poorly. I also express empathy and sympathy almost to a fault. Often times this means taking on other people's burdens as my own, but this isn't necessary. I need to continue to work to make this world a better place, but I need to give these burdens to God.
I refuse to sit back and believe that if I want something done, that other people will do it. Growing up fiercely independent taught me that if you want something done, you're just going to have to do it yourself. I often see things happening and want something to be done about it. If I see racism happening on campus, you better believe that I'm going to say something about it. If I see girls being mean to each within my friend group, I'm going to say something about it. I am a firm believer that people should be treated with kindness. One of my favorite bible verses is 1 Peter 3:8. It says "Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind." It just so happens that if you were to write a song with the same message, that you would end up with a song like Tim McGraw's "Humble and Kind". (Coincidentally, this is one of my favorite songs.)
You may be thinking, "Wow, how humble of her to think that she can change the world." (This of course is in the most sarcastic way possible.) Let me tell you, it is not by my doings, but of God's. Without God, I cannot do anything. John 15:5 says "I am the vine, you are the branches. The one who abides in me while I abide in him produces much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing." God has placed it on my heart to stand up for the oppressed. I know that his heart breaks seeing what is going on in our culture, and he has given me the skills and opportunities to do something about it. I plan to continue to stand up for the injustice that happens around me very regularly.
"While some see them as the crazy ones, we see them as genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do." ~ Steve Jobs
