The one thing that I have probably learned in college is that things are always changing. Just when I’m starting to fall into a rhythm with school work, the semester ends and it’s time to start new again. Just when I think that I’m getting used to school in general, it’s time to start career planning and figuring out how to get a job. Sometimes you don’t even get a chance to breathe and take it all in before life changes all over again. Change is terrifying and confusing…
But it’s also okay.
I wasn’t always a fan of change. Okay, fine, i’m still not a fan of change. I don’t like that whenever even something small changes, it throws my entire schedule off. I don’t like how when something unexpected comes up, it takes away from the little bit of free time that I seem to have. Even though I don’t necessarily love change, I’ve definitely learned to make my peace with change. For starters, it’s easier to face change head on rather than to spend time trying to avoid it or go around it. The class you wanted to take was filled? Yes, we all know how much that sucks, but trust me, there are other classes out there for you. Truth is that unexpected changes are what prepare us for real life, where our parents and friends can’t hold our hands and protect us from everything. They’re how we learn to ourselves and trust that we can handle it even when we think we can’t
It’s also important to remember that life isn’t just changing while you’re standing still. Whether you realize it or not, you’re changing all the time. Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely not the same person I was just a year ago, when I was just starting off at UMass. For one, I thought I was sooo ready for college because I had overcome the part where I physically switch schools and relocate. Of course I soon found out that that’s not what the biggest change would be at all. The biggest change, by far, is definitely how I’ve changed since I’ve been here. I’ve learned and grown, and more importantly, I found out what it’s like to be an adult on my own.
Change is a good thing.
It just means that you’re growing as a person and moving on with your life. It’s not the worst thing.
