Why You Should Push Yourself

Pushing yourself and taking risks reaps endless benefits.

"Challenging yourself” is a phrase that I use loosely: Everyone has their own version of what they believe pushing themselves means.

To some, challenging yourself themselves means lifting more than usual at the gym. To others, it may mean taking a risk at home, at work, or in school. There are infinite meanings.

In my life so far, I have challenged myself quite a lot. I have also given up more times than I can count.

From personal observations, I have discovered that giving up is typically associated with being “lazy.” In some cases, yes, a person may lose the motivation to follow through. On the other hand, there are people out there who are faced with circumstances that give them no choice but to throw in the towel. Giving up is normal, and sometimes it can be the wisest option.

Challenging oneself can be exhausting, but it can be rewarding in two main ways.

1. It encourages personal growth

Life is all about adapting. Sooner or later, we all realize that we have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Challenging yourself largely has to do with stepping outside of your comfort zone (no risk is too big or too small). At the end of the day, regardless of whether or not you enjoyed said challenge, you have grown as an individual. Many are used to sticking to routine and thus playing it safe. While it is absolutely acceptable to follow a routine, pushing yourself to embrace a little change is important too. When individuals start to become confident making small changes to their lives, this behavior can push them to take on bigger challenges in the long run.

2. It promotes self-understanding

Although challenging oneself can be overwhelming, it often times can help an individual determine what works for them and what doesn't. Signing up for classes is a perfect example of this. There are many instances in which a student will sign up for a difficult class (believing that they will love it), but they soon discover that they are doing poorly or hate the class material. Taking risks isn't about looking cool and showing off. It's about feeling empowered and discovering what actions make you feel either happy or crappy.

On that note, it is imperative to acknowledge that challenging oneself and failing is okay. Failing when you challenge yourself can motivate you to find other ways to push yourself that may prove to be successful.

Pushing yourself can reap endless rewards, but it is not necessarily easy. This should not discourage you from trying new things and taking bigger risks, however. Honestly, some of the best (and unexpected) moments in life are the ones that are a result of challenging yourself.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
