How A Cat Became My Role Model

Cats lead to happiness

Since the time of the ancient Egyptians, cats have been treasured. While their companionship is valuable, the wisdom of cats is even more so. Those ancient Egyptians had it right; cats should be revered as powerful. They know the easiest paths to happiness.

I share a house with a black cat named Bucket. I loved cats before Bucket came to live with me, but now I understand the true value of his presence. By applying his lifestyle to mine, I can live a happier, carefree life. Cats can teach humans many things, these being just a few of them.

1. Take naps

There is a reason that people call it a "cat nap." Cats always seem to be taking a snooze. While cats sleep from 16 to 20 hours a day, and humans don't need nearly as much, taking naps can make your life better. It can provide a boost of energy without caffeine during the day when you need it. If you take a cat nap with a cat, that's a bonus!

2. Don't stop until you get what you need

When it's dinner time, a cat always knows. If a cat isn't fed on time, the meowing starts. Bucket has taught me not to stop asking for what you need until you get it. Be persistent. If you need help with something, keep asking. If you have a goal that you want to meet, keep striving for it. Persevere like a hungry kitty cat!

3. Make time to play

It is difficult to remember sometimes in this busy-bee society to stop working and have fun. Cats know when it's time to play. Whether they swipe at a passing shoelace or pounce on a stuffed mouse, cats play whenever they see a potential toy. Take a page out of the cat's book and make sure to enjoy yourself. Do something you like— working shouldn't be the only thing you do.

4. Express affection

Some people have a hard time expressing their affection towards people, even if they really love them. Next time you wonder if you should hold back your feelings, think of the cat. A cat is always honest about its feelings. A cat cuddles and purrs if he loves you, and runs away if he doesn't. Express your affection to those who you love. Honesty is the best way to express feelings.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
