I came across an old John Green video that mentioned some tips about what to write about (if you plan on getting a book published) and one thing he said was to write something people care about. So, I thought about this question, and yes, I actually ended up googling "What do people care about." This is because I realized as a person who spends most of her time obviously in her bedroom writing odyssey articles, studying lines, and studying college stuff... that I don't know much about the outside world. I wish I could say I did a poll or something to show what people cared about most in 2016, but I was lazy... so I didn't. So, here are some things that we cared about in 2016. Let's see if anyone remembers this list of 15 things that we cared about.

1. LGBT Rights

2016 was a HUGE year for the LGBTQ community with the legalization of LGBTQ marriage. But, for those of the LGBTQ community, that was probably the only happy thing that happened. Donald Trump's presidency caused the LGBTQ community more fear than ever before. If you wish to read more on what his presidency could mean to the LGBTQ community read HERE.

2. Planned Parenthood

The defunding of Planned Parenthood was very much cared about. Women needed contraception and other things Planned Parenthood could offer, and they were scared they were not going to get it. This proposal is still in works, and with a republican house and senate, there is not much hope for women.

3. Hillary Clinton vs Donald Trump

We really cared about these folks because they were running for president. While the whole country voted for Hillary, the electoral college voted for Donald Trump who became the nation's next republican president. Since the election results made college students so upset in some schools, therapy dogs were brought in and students were given passes to skip classes due to trauma. Donald Trump was left with an angry nation. There were protests and cries for help once he won the election. This was a very scary time for all of us.

4. HB2

There was a lot of talk about North Carolina's Bathroom bill which upset a lot of people. In the bill, citizens had to use the bathroom of their gender instead of the one they identified with. They wanted separate bathrooms, and some businesses could even discriminate against LGBTQ members. The government threatened to pull funding, etc. This was a really big deal.

5. All celebrity deaths

We lost a lot of incredible actors, and celebrities like Gene Wilder, Harper Lee, Nancy Reagan, Frank Sinatra Jr, Prince, Muhammad Ali, Elie Wiesel, Garry Marshall, and Alan Rickman. This very much upset and changed the entire world. There were a bunch of very sad moments for America.

6. Hamilton: The Musical

Lin-Manuel Miranda gave a moving speech about his musical at the Tony Awards saying "And love is love is love is love ... can not be killed or swept aside." His musical not only opened sometime this year, but it caused a lot of media attention because of what the show represents. The show gives people who are of color a chance to play white characters changing the views of theater directors forever.

7. Black Lives Matter

I'm from Greensboro, NC where we had several protests over Black Lives Matter. We had to put up with shootings and being silenced by the government who allowed these behaviors from policemen to happen. Our brothers and sisters had to live with the idea that if they did the wrong thing around a cop, they might be sent home in a body bag. This kind of thing made us a stronger nation. We all stood together as NC legislature took away the body cams on policemen, showing us once again that our voices didn't matter.

8. Bombings

We cared about all the bombings and horrifying things that happened overseas as well as in our own countries. "There were 2477 Islamic attacks in 61 countries, in which 21256 people were killed and 26727 injured." (You can read more about all the bombings at the link in blue). We cared about everyone who died and honor them today. We understood that it was not the fault of all Muslim. We understood that there are just simply bad people who do bad things.

9. Shootings

So many shootings happened in 2016, such as the shooting in Orlando, the shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, and the shooting in Planned Parenthood. We saw a lot of deaths and a whole lot of blood. We had a rough year, and we can only help for a brighter future filled with peace.

10. Protests

When Donald Trump became president, many joined in the protests. Not only did we protest against Donald Trump, but we also protested against the defunding of planned parenthood. We even protested about gay rights, minimum wage, Black Lives Matter, and all subjects. These protests brought us closer together as a country.

11. War

This child changed the world and showed us the truth about the Syrian war. That horrible, unnecessary war.. We saw so many horrifying images. We saw the videos on Facebook of the children crying in the emergency room over their relatives death. It's not a choice for them. We still wonder today when this war will finally end.

12. Donald Trump's Inauguration

A few celebrities like Elton John, Beyonce, Brad Paisley, said they will not be singing at the inauguration. They couldn't find people who would want to perform at it. Apparently, they resulted to forcing "The Rocketts," who didn't want to perform at it and had no choice because of their contract. There are rumors of protest and other things such as the whole inauguration will smell like weed. The rumor is free joints will be given away. Apparently, this is also legal. I have a feeling a LOT of people will be high.

Not only that, but some designers even refused to design the first lady's dress.

13. Technology

We really cared about technology in 2016. New products from Amazon including the "Echo Dot," "Alexis," "Smile.Amazon," "Dash Button," and the iPhone 7 all came out this year to make their debut to the world.

14. Refugees

Obama opened up the borders to allow refugees seeking help from Syria, and other war-torn countries this year. We welcomed them last month and spent our own time raising money for things for them.

15. Hurricane Matthew

We all remember Hurricane Matthew from a few months ago, which came into North Carolina, Florida, and other areas. We remember those who were lost, those whose homes were destroyed, and the tears shed. This was a very violent hurricane that shocked America and other parts of the world.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
