On July 30, 2015, in Hackensack, New Jersey, temperatures reached as high as 90 degrees. A mother decided to go to the local Costco with her two children. One child went inside with her while the other stayed locked in the car with a window slightly cracked in the parking lot. The child's crying and screams were heard throughout the parking lot and a Costco employee was the first to alert a nearby police, officer. Officer Rich Carrion smashed through the window to save the little girl, who was apparently very hot and sweaty. Another officer came to the scene to comfort and hold the child and when they noticed the mother come up with a grocery cart filled with items and another child in tow, they confronted her.
The officer holding her child said, "Is this your kid?"
The mother preceded to apologize saying, "Oh. Sorry, sorry."
Then the officer said, "No, sorry. She could have died."
In the video that has surfaced online you can hear the officer refusing to give the mother her child. There was no indication of how long the child was actually in there for, but it's believed that if she were kept in there 10 minutes longer, the child would have suffered from a heat stroke. The mother, Chaeyoung Lim-Kim, was arrested and charged with child endangerment while the child was sent to Hackensack University Medical Center and is now in the care of her father.

There have also been many incidents of dogs being left in hot cars. Flashdance star Jennifer Beals was filming in Vancouver and left her dog in the car. A passerby stood by the car in concern for the dog and Beals walked over to say, "It's fine. Thank you." The passerby replied back to her, "It's fine, OK. Just letting you know I'm reporting this."
This is all extremely not OK. Children and animals can die from the heat in locked cars and they have before. I don't know what it will take for people to stop making this mistake, but the neglect must stop. These are living beings being left in 90-degree environments. Many people have taken it upon themselves to portray what it actually feels like to be left in a hot car for even a short period of time. NFL star, Tyrann Mathieu, decided to partner with PETA to raise awareness about dogs in hot cars.
Even after eight minutes, the car reached a temperature of 120 degrees and Tyrann was able to let himself out, but dogs don't get that luxury. Even with humans, the little girl that was left in the car at the Costco parking lot wasn't able to escape because her mother locked the doors and she was too young to understand how to unlock it.
With all this being said, please be aware of the temperature and never leave your child or animal in the car without air conditioning on, or just don't leave them in there at all. Living is a beautiful thing and every creature on this planet should experience it.
