Captain Beefheart's 'Trout Mask Replica': An Astonishingly Puzzling Adventure

Sometimes, we encounter events in life that makes us go "What?" The boundless possibilities of life inevitably lead to confusion at some point, and it is these instances that can have a profound effect on us. Certain situations force us to reconsider what we knew about the world, and they make us analyze what we witnessed. The world has so much that can mystify us, and it seems like the universe never runs out of ways to stump people. Life can be a highly baffling game at times, and one album that represents this is Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica."

"Trout Mask Replica" was released in 1969, and its sound completely redefined music. Sounding more like damaged pieces of a Rubix cube than regular songs, the compositions are full of abnormalities that can startle the listener. Incongruous guitars play off each other in the most random way possible, and the bass sounds like a confused old man that happened to stumble into a huge dance party. The drums play these deranged and seemingly careless beats that lack cohesion to them, and Captain Beefheart sings in a gravelly style that is infused with absurdity. The instruments flip flop with each other frequently, and the album becomes a treasure chest of befuddling idiosyncrasies.

"Trout Mask Replica" is also an extremely challenging listen. With of all of these bizarre elements combining in a highly impractical manner, much of the album feels like a catastrophe that you cannot look away from. "Trout Mask Replica" twists and turns like a snake that consumed excessive amounts of caffeine, and the album eschews melodies for fractured compositions. Portions of the album are so unusual that they become an aural example of a Salvador Dali painting, and the inharmonious playing creates uncomfortable amounts of dissonance. "Trout Mask Replica" is a daunting and highly inaccessible effort, and it requires exceptional effort from fans and newcomers alike.

Getting into the album holds great rewards for the listener, though. Its lack of accessibility inspires its devotees to dig deeper into the album, and it makes them think harder about why they like music. The bizarre arrangements become entertaining in their confusion, and silly humor lies behind the outlandishness. "Trout Mask Replica" bonds friends through its ludicrous nature, and the endless complexities are always intriguing. "Trout Mask Replica" shows how a listener can approach demanding music, and it demonstrates the fun in perplexity.

Captain Beefheart succeeded in creating a remarkable work with "Trout Mask Replica." The album is an endlessly strange barrel of weirdness that flourishes in its peculiarities, and its unorthodox musicianship destroys conventional attitudes towards music. "Trout Mask Replica" is difficult and occasionally incomprehensible, and its burdensome nature invites continuous tries to be understood. The album also benefit listeners hugely once they let themselves into its world, as it contains comedy and important lessons about music. "Trout Mask Replica" is an effort that will continue to astonish its audiences for years to come, and it's truly a one of a kind work that cannot be duplicated.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
