A Cappella Making A Difference In Society

Everyone knows who their favorite musical artists are and love singing along to their favorite songs. Some people get the opportunity to showcase their incredible voices in chorus and a cappella groups around campus. James Madison University's a cappella group Note-oriety received a lot of attention when a music video of a Beyoncé cover went viral.

The song “Pretty Hurts” is a song that is extremely controversial for the millennial generation. It explains how society tells women that in order to be happy, women have to “be prettier” or “be skinnier.” Beyoncé’s song illustrates how wrong this status quo is for women, and how if women think they need to alter themselves in order to be happy, “It's the[ir] soul that needs the surgery.” This depiction and mindset that women should be altered is flawed since all women are gorgeous in their own, unique way, and society should not undermine that fact.

Note-oriety, the a cappella group at JMU, created a music video for their cover of Beyoncé’s emotional and inspiring song. This music video was leaked to the Internet, allowing everyone around the world to have access to the video. These girls were able to share their incredible song with the world, making a huge impact on society and gaining great recognition. This group was able to combine the meaning of the song and its implications with beauty and grace in their voices. The frames of the mirrors with negative and positive words display the growth of confidence over the course of the song, which is brilliantly illustrated through the video. Due to the fact that this video went viral, this music group is having a bigger impact on the nation than they thought they ever could. Check out the video below.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.
