Being in the 21st century, it's hard to go a day without using some form of technology. GPS, cellphones, iPads, e-readers, laptops; the list goes on and on. Technology has advanced our society in so many ways, helped to cure disease, and save lives. But I think the issue we have is using the benefits of technological advances as excuses or justification for all of the reasons why technology is hurting us.
When was the last time you wrote someone a letter? You probably can't even remember. How far is your phone away from you right now? I bet you can easily see it, sitting on a table or bed as it lights up. You probably don't even consider technology to have harmful effects.
When you're out to dinner with a friend, your phone is sitting on the table. It's what we've always known being a 20-something.You are engaging in multiple conversations with other people via Twitter, text messages, or Instagram. This interrupts your communication and conversation with the person who is sitting right across from you. And lone behold, they are probably on their phone too. So why did you go out to dinner, just to talk to people who aren't there with you?
Even though parents will argue that the devices are educationally purposes, there is still no evidence that says that these devices increase intelligence. So what's the point? Remember the days when we playing with blocks to keep us entertained, and now opened up the newest app?
Our children are committing suicide because they are a victim of cyber bullying. The older we get, the younger the generations are being allowed to be involved in social media during times in their developmental lives when they are coming into their own. Social media is nothing but a tool for harm amongst children and teens, and causing them to suppress their self identity. Whole children are delving into online communication, they disrupt the communication skills they would be gaining over face to face communication. This just foreshadows their success being able to communicate with others when they are pitching a sales idea, or sitting in a job interview. So what makes you think technology is so great?
I'm fed up with the iPads in schools, or the increase in online homework. We get bored of the old iPhone, so we make another every year that does that much and more. I won't argue that technology doesn't save lives, or create jobs, but there is a fine line to what is necessary and what it too much.
Do we really need this much advanced technology to live our lives?
