Calling Out Snapchat Culture

Something has to be said.

Today is November 28, 2017. This year has brought a slew of negativity into the world, but specifically in recent news the idea of rape culture and sexual harassment issues within the scope of Hollywood and media. I find it intriguing, revolting, sad, and disturbing (don’t know how many other negative adjectives I can fit in there) that I open my phone each day to a new rape allegation by an entitled person who thought that they could take advantage of someone else. Every time my finger hits the home button of my phone, I am inundated with a new update about a celebrity that supposedly assaulted or caused harm to someone. There is always a story, but they don’t come out until it’s far too late.

This is why I am extremely confused. Are we supposed to believe a victim coming out of the woodwork 5 years later or our favorite CW channel’s “it guy”. I do not have an answer, however, I do think that this very issue can be relevant to the link between entitlement in teenagers and social media culture.

Unfortunately, where I grew up, I was surrounded by very entitled people. It is one thing to be privileged, and most of us have privileges we are not even consciously aware of, and it is another thing to flaunt certain behaviors and act as if you have the upper hand over others. I firmly believe that entitlement plays a large role in how one behaves throughout their life.

Snapchat is a place where local entitled children have the easy access to take advantage of each other. Snapchat is a socially destructive app that causes sexual pressure due to its instantaneous nature. This is very strange for me to admit to as I essentially grew up with the app and have a strange fondness associated with it, but it is a place that is very non-conducive to an environment for young adults. It provides some with the ability to mentally toy with other’s emotions and potentially screw them up for life.

Though this essay seems extremely morbid and elitist, I just feel like Ineed to take a stand. I think that it is crucial we do not allow entitlement to dictate how others are treated.

While most of my posts focus on humor in an effort to dictate relevant information that can also serve as a relief and pleasure, it is also important to focus on the not-so-rosy aspects of life as well.

So Hollywood may be having its fair share of scandals at the moment, but do not neglect the fact that similar acts of entitlement are probably going on right underneath your nose. Entitlement is a serious issue within today’s youth.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
