There’s something so unique about the relationship shared between grandparents and their grandchildren. You might not have realized it as a little kid, but the amount of joy you bring into their life is immeasurable, and the love that they have for you is unconditional.
Although it might become easy for a simple task such as calling your grandparents to slip your mind while leading such a fast-paced life in college, you are never too busy to give them a call to just say “thanks.”
Thank them for the times they took you out to dinner when you made the Honor Roll in high school, for all the times they said “yes” when mom and dad told you “no," and for all the times they gave you money in seventh and eighth grade to go to the mall with your friends and walk around on a Friday night. If you are as blessed as I am, thank them for helping you pay for college or the repairs that needed to be done on your car.
Talk to them about how their day was. Actually ask about it. Actually care about it. I’m sure it would put a huge smile on your grandma’s face to know you actually care about what she is making for dinner tonight.
Make plans for when you come home from college to visit them, it will really give them something to look forward to. It might sound tacky, but you have no idea how much light you shed on their lives. They might only be around for a part of your life, but you are their whole lives.
Make sure you let your grandparents know how much you appreciate all of the things that they have given you, big or small. Whether it’s letting them know you’re thankful for your first car that they bought you, or the tacky cards they give you on holidays like St. Patrick’s Day with a crisp $10 bill inside, do not let their kind acts go unnoticed.
In this “here-today-gone-tomorrow” world we live in, you never know when the last time you talk to someone will be. Do not be fearful that one day you might regret the things you never took the time to say. Call your grandparents. Tell them you love them.
