Okay, so maybe I don't call my mom every day. But almost. My mom and I are just close; she's my BFF. She's my first call when I get some good news, and the first one I turn to when I need to rant. (Like, seriously, you won't believe what this kid said in class today, Mom.)
Maybe you think it's lame that my mom and I talk so often. But guess what? I don't care. Because talking to my mom is great, and it has a lot of perks:
1. She's just funny.
Whether she's being sassy or just plain weird, my mom can always make me laugh. And with the stress of classes and internships and *gasp* graduation, it's really nice to have someone there to make me smile. Mom is always in my corner, even when I'm being kind of dumb. (And let's face it, we're all pretty dumb sometimes.)
2. She always has time for me.
My mom is never too busy to talk to me. She'll pick up the phone and say, "Oh, hey, I'm just about to sit down to eat." I'll ask her if I should call back, but her response is always, "No, it's fine. What's up?"
3. I don't have to have a reason to call her.
I'm pretty sure my mom is always secretly delighted when she asks me why I called and my response is, "I just wanted to chat." She'll tell me how her day went or ask me random questions. Sometimes we just sit there quietly, each doing our own thing on the other end.
4. Mom always has all the gossip.
Who isn't a sucker for some good gossip once in awhile? Whenever I want the details on some local drama or who said what to who's cousin at someone's family party, Mom's the one I ask. And gossiping with her is particularly great because, like I said, she's my best friend! We can talk candidly and know that our secrets are safe with one another.
5. Sometimes I'll get a "Hi!" from the rest of the crew.
When I call Mom, I'm likely to get a "Hi, love you!" from my dad in the background or quick chat with my sister on the side. And talking to the rest of my family is always nice.
6. Better yet, sometimes I get to see my cats.
Okay, yeah, I'm a nerd. I admit it. But my mom works from home, and that means my cats are usually around. Sometimes we'll turn on video chat just so I can see them. Those fuzzy little balls of fur always make my day.
7. Mom tells it like it is.
Even when I don't want to hear it. Yeah, she's my best friend, but she knows when not to sugarcoat. (And then cheers me up with one of those laughs I mentioned earlier.)
8. She gives good advice.
I'll admit that my mom knows a thing or two, and listening to her advice has (almost) never led me astray.
9. I never have to fill her in on what's going on in my life.
We talk almost every day, so she already knows. All I have to do is bring up that one professor or job and she's like, "Oh, what happened this week?"
10. I can ask her stupid questions.
"Mom, what are taxes? How do I vote? How often should I wash these sheets? What's a good tip at the hairdresser? What brand of medicine should I buy? What's my social security password? Can you make me a dentist appointment?"
11. She's always got my back.
At the end of the day, my mom will always be there for me. Happy or sad, she's the one I can call. She'll always be proud or worried or some weird combination of the two. It doesn't matter how many times I screw up or how many dumb questions I ask; my mom will always love me.
So thanks, Mom, for being amazing. Go love your moms today, everybody. (Even though I'm still convinced that mine is the best.)
