Caitlyn Jenner Isn't Perfect... And That Might Be Just What We Need To See

Caitlyn's wrongdoings humanize trans people, and her conservative opinions show that she really was born transgender.

In the past year, Caitlyn Jenner has gone from former Olympian and reality TV star to a transgender icon and the winner of Glamour's Woman of the Year award. She has garnered attention for her profound statements on courage and her openness about coming out and transitioning in various interviews and her new TV series, "I Am Cait." But there are a lot of things wrong with Caitlyn Jenner.

Though the country is becoming more accepting as time goes on, much of America is still set in a transphobic mindset. Caitlyn Jenner is constantly misgendered and misnamed. Her gender is called into question and people publicly debate what "parts" she has. People will tell you that she should not have been named Woman of the Year because she is not a woman. There are plenty of people willing to talk to you about their problems with Jenner's gender, but I am not one of them. I'm writing to talk about my problems with Caitlyn as a person--her opinions, her actions--and why her downfalls might benefit the trans community.

There is a very clear, bold line between detesting Caitlyn for transphobic reasons as opposed to her personality. You cannot say "I hate Caitlyn Jenner because she is trans and that's something that's weird to me," without being transphobic. However, you can say, "I don't like Caitlyn Jenner because she has a poor relationship with the LGBT community and doesn't recognize that her struggles in no way mirror those of working-class trans women."

Caitlyn has not used her platform in the way she could have. She barely mentions the countless murders and struggles of trans women of color. She went on "The Ellen Show" and stated her opposition of gay marriage and, when she received backlash, tried to save face by posting on her blog that anyone should be able to marry the person they loved. She does not admit that the struggles she faces as a rich, white trans woman with the ultimate love and support of her family are nothing compared to the shame and danger millions of other trans people in the country face just by trying to be who they are. She jokes that the hardest part about being a woman is "deciding what to wear." She is anti-feminist.

Ultimately, Caitlyn Jenner does not take the transgender community's struggle seriously. And though her Woman of the Year award was culturally monumental, another trans woman, like Laverne Cox--who regularly works with the Trevor Project and works tirelessly to help save young lives and educate the world on what it's like to be transgender--would have been a better recipient.

But by being a not-so-personable trans woman in the public eye, Caitlyn Jenner does two great things:

1. She shows that trans people are just that--people. You can hate her for being anti-feminist, or elitist, but you can't hate her for being Caitlyn. She is not a perfect goddess; she is a human being with feelings and opinions that can sometimes be problematic. She makes mistakes. Caitlyn, in all her misdoings, shows the world that trans people are no different than you and me.

2. She very firmly identifies as a conservative Republican, which shows that being trans is not a choice. Caitlyn was born a woman on the inside, like the millions of other transgender people around the world were born the way they are. What conservative Republican would choose to be transgender? The fact that her identity doesn't fit her opinions stands alone as proof of that.

So be angry at Caitlyn Jenner for her ignorance of the daily dangers millions of transgender people, especially those of color, face in the United States. Be angry that she doesn't support furthering the women's rights movements. But never be angry at her for being Caitlyn, who she really is--who she was born to be.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
