With fall and winter approaching, here are a few guidelines for sporting perfect and timeless colder weather outfits.
White After Labor Day
Winter whites are, in fact, a thing, ladies. Although some of you may have been misinformed about the whole "no white after Labor Day" thing, I’m here to set the record straight. Contrary to popular belief, the unspoken rule mainly just applies to shoes, whereas white pants are fair game. I know I’m telling you all, “no white shoes after Labor Day,” but I’m not trying to place a ban on Converse spanning the whole winter. This actually applies only to dress shoes (like heels or flats), so wear your white athletic shoes as much as your heart desires. Example: white jeans with camel riding boots, and a roomy chambray button-up make for a perfect cold weather outfit.
Black and Navy vs. Black and Brown
Although there is some controversy on the subject of mixing black with other dark colors, one is sin and one is in. Mixing black and navy just might be the ultimate fashion faux pas/ Don’t do it. Ever. The two colors are too close on the color wheel to coexist in the same outfit -- only Kate Middleton can get away with such a thing. However, black and brown together has been an emerging trend. Example: a simple black dress paired with riding boots and a camel sweater is a good way to winterize your never-ending dress (or black) collection.
Denim on Denim
There is a fine science to rocking the denim on denim trend that is emerging. The key to pulling off this look is to pick a dark denim pant to pair with a very light denim top. Caution: in order to avoid pulling a Britney circa 1990, never wear two (or more) denim articles of clothing that are the same, or similar in shade.
Patterns
Patterns are a wonderful thing in the fashion world, if worn correctly. When mixing patterns, it is important to keep in mind that similar patterns (like horizontal and vertical stripes) clash. Therefore, try to wear patterns that are different from each other (like floral and stripes, polka dots and stripes, or plaid and polka dots). “What about chevron?” or “How do you incorporate patterned leggings?” you may ask, and the answer is simply no.
Leggings as Pants
Leggings are and always will be considered pants.
Lipstick: Yay or Nay?
Lipstick is often the finishing touch on any fall or winter outfit. Try to stick with a cranberry or plum, especially if you have a lighter complexion, because sometimes darker is not better. I’ve come to the conclusion that only Kylie Jenner can pull of matte black lipstick. With that being said, my personal favorite is "Hang Up" by M.A.C.
