It did not become real to me until I heard the words “My fellow citizens…”
I held my breath (okay, maybe not. But it sure felt like it) as I watched with the rest of the world as President Barack Obama give his "Farewell Address."
“To Joe Biden, the scrappy kid from Scranton who became Delaware's favorite son: You were the first choice I made as a nominee, and the best. Not just because you have been a great vice president, but because in the bargain, I gained a brother.”
Those were the words from an emotional President Barack Obama uttered to an equally emotional Vice President Joe Biden.
And that, to me, was the most poignant moment of his speech.
While many may have focused on other parts of the address, I began to think about how and why the "bromance" worked, and why it was significant for the world to see. Their relationship has transpired and inspired millions of Americans. It is something that has never been seen before in office, and it took on an identity of its own. I mean, who can forget the viral Obama/Biden memes?
The connection between both families displays unity. From “Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, girl of the South Side,” to the teacher who kept her day job in Jill Biden. They all come from different walks of life and different backgrounds, but they came together with one goal in mind: To better America.
In many ways, they are the billboard of America—different races, working parents. They consist of a pair raising children, and a pair whose children are now assisting them. They understand the needs of the poor, in respect, grace, and love, always. Ironically, as the two families prepare to exit the office, now more than ever, they represent how America must be going forward: Together as one. Not in fear, but in faith.
A day later, President Obama sealed the "bromance" by deciding to surprise “the best vice president America has ever had.” Biden received the Presidential Medal of Freedom – an honor which only Colin Powell and Ellsworth Bunker have obtained.
"This is a remarkable man, and I just hope that the asterisk in history that is attached to my name when they talk about this presidency, is that I can say I was part of, part of the journey of a remarkable man who did remarkable things for this country," Biden said.
Obama and Biden worked for America because they are America.
