Dear Brock Turner

It's not about just one girl, it's about every girl

Dear Brock Turner,

On Friday, September 2nd, you will be released from your three month sentence in jail and enter the real world. When Saturday comes around you will wish you were back in that jail cell instead of out in the open.

While you were sitting behind bars, the world was being awakened on how the court system and sexual assault cases work majority of the time. You were supposed to get six years in jail and somehow managed to get a judge to make you serve only three months. Three months for a lifetime of pain that you caused a girl for your judgement.

This isn't about one girl that you took advantage of and raped behind a dumpster, it is about every girl out there in the world that has ever been sexual assaulted or raped.

You may think that life will be easy for you and that you will be well protected by your friends and family, but in reality that wont be the case.

Here is the thing that you need to understand. Due to your actions, you will never be forgotten. You will not only go down in history as the boy who got away with raping an unconscious woman, but you will go down in history as one of many people that got away with rape. From the moment you step outside as a free man, you will represent ever person on a college campus that has gotten away with rape. It will follow you every where you go and that will be worse than any jail sentence you could receive.

My feelings towards your actions lay very heavy on my heart. You took it upon yourself to think that it would be okay to rape an innocent girl who had no way of defending herself and then have the audacity to declare yourself the victim.

You are not the victim. The unconscious woman you raped is the victim.

During the trial, The Stanford rape victim read a letter that she wrote that was directed towards Brock Turner. At the end of her letter, she stated the following:

"And finally, to girls everywhere, I am with you. On nights when you feel alone, I am with you. When people doubt you or dismiss you, I am with you. I fought everyday for you. So never stop fighting, I believe you. As the author Anne violated once wrote, “Lighthouses don’t go running all over an island looking for boats to save; they just stand there shining.” Although I can’t save every boat, I hope that by speaking today, you absorbed a small amount of light, a small knowing that you can’t be silenced, a small satisfaction that justice was served, a small assurance that we are getting somewhere, and a big, big knowing that you are important, unquestionably, you are untouchable, you are beautiful, you are to be valued, respected, undeniably, every minute of every day, you are powerful and nobody can take that away from you. To girls everywhere, I am with you. Thank you."

She represents every woman who has ever been sexual assaulted and raped. She represents the women who fought for justice and the women who suffered in silence. She represents every woman who couldn't fight back and she represents myself who was sexually assaulted and raped during my freshman year in college.

It takes a lot out of person who has been violated to relive those moments in order to give someone else knowledge about being aware of what can happen in college and every else for that matter.

So, for Mr. Turner who got out easy, this letter of for you.

I hope the world welcomes you with open arms on everything wrong you have done in the events taking place in January and up to now.

I hope you never get a chance to forget what you did and it follows you around forever.

I hope you miss the days you spent in a jail cell and miss the comfort it provided you.

I hope you get everything you could possible deserve.

This letter is not based on hate or anger that I have towards you, but the fact that you did an unforgivable thing and were practically given a high five. You, just like so many other people, got away with it and that is what makes this whole matter into a discussion.

I hope you see how the world has changed since your case came about and realize that you will be the last person who ever gets off easy.

You changed one girls life forever and in return, changed the whole worlds opinion on you and your actions. So welcome back to reality, I hope it treats you accordingly.

Sincerely,

A College Female

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
