An Open Letter To A Monster

Because he no longer deserves the title of "human being"

Mr. Turner,

You are a horrible human being. I use the phrase "human being" very lightly because, in my humble opinion, you are no longer deserving of the title. Just like you are no longer a Stanford swimmer, or even a Stanford student. No, you sir are a monster. And please do not misunderstand, I don't mean monster in the sense of the boogeyman or Dracula. No, Mr. Turner, you are so much scarier than they are. You see, there are many differences between you and say, Dracula. For one, while Dracula only wants blood and to most likely rule the underworld, what you want has a much steeper price that you have yet to pay. If Dracula gets caught, he gets a stake to the heart, as he well deserves. When you were caught, you got six months. You raped a woman while she was unconscious, and you only got six months in prison. Not even six months, because you got let out after three for "good behavior." Where is the justice in that? We as a country pride ourselves on our justice system and yet when it fails, that's just it. It doesn't go up any higher, and you get away with rape with no more than a slap on the wrist. Of course there are some similarities between you and the vampire, the main one being that you primarily seem to prey at night. But the most obvious difference, and the scariest in my opinion, is that while Dracula is very fictional, you Mr. Turner are real. You are a real walking and talking monster, one much scarier than anything in a horror film. Because you couldn't even own up to what you did. You did one of the worst things a person can do, were caught in the act, and still proceeded to plead not guilty. And you don't get to blame the alcohol or the party, because you are to blame. She was unconscious, passed out, and instead of checking to make sure she was okay or calling 911 you violated her. And you aren't even the only issue here, your father is to blame as well. Oh no, poor little Brock isn't eating all of his favorite foods anymore, he doesn't deserve prison even though he raped someone. No why should he get punished for, and I quote, "20 minutes of action." If you could not tell, those two sentences were filled with all of the sarcasm contained in my tiny little body. Your parents should not be calling out to other parents to warn their children about drinking at parties. That is not the way to avoid this situation. The way to avoid this situation is to teach their children, daughters and sons, not to take advantage of people who are passed out and cannot give consent. They should be calling for parents to teach their children not to rape, because its wrong. You have made me very angry Mr. Turner. Not just you, of course, but your parents and everyone involved in your case who decided you only deserved three months in prison for rape. But I'm more than angry, Brock. I'm afraid. I'm afraid of people like you. I'm afraid of being taken advantage of because I was passed out. I'm afraid of someone else not getting the punishment they deserve for something like this. I used to be afraid of the dark, and now I'm afraid of who lurks there. And yes, it is because of you, Mr. Turner. You are the reason I'm afraid of the dark, you are why I clutch my keys while walking alone at night. You are no longer a human being in my eyes. Now you're nothing but a monster.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
