Bringing A Tattoo Home To Your Parents

It's time to face the truth - your tattoo is definitely going to follow you home this Thanksgiving break.

Bringing A Tattoo Home To Your Parents

So, you did it. You finally got that tattoo you have been wanting to get for the longest time. Or maybe a recent impulse arose, and there's some strange symbol on your wrist that holds a context that you aren't even sure of yourself. But, whatever it is, it's there and it's permanent. What does this mean? Well, for one, maybe it means that you should have thought things through a little bit longer before having a needle shoved into your skin. But for college students, it also means that it isn't going to magically disappear before this Thanksgiving break. Time to tell your parents!

I have wanted a tattoo throughout my entire life. I was dazzled at the idea of each and every one holding some hidden story, inspirational (or not.) But I was never sure of what I would get or what kind of story I wanted to express. Looking at the tattoo every day would remind me of that story, and that was a huge commitment to make. So, I waited. And waited. And then recent events took place, and BAM! - a tattoo idea was birthed. I finally got it about three weeks later. Two months into college, and instead of bringing home some friends my family can meet, I bring them a tattoo.

Let's face it. You're scared out of your wits, you can't figure out the right words to say to them, and/or you wish you could hide it for the rest of your life just to avoid confrontation. Regardless, you need advice. Luckily for you, I have a few pointers.

1) Accept the fact that disapproval might be the very first reaction.

I didn't really get the ideal reaction of, "Well, honey, that was quite the move. But as long as you're happy, I'm happy. It's your body." There was a bit of screaming. And crying. But, if they love you the way you think they do, they will come around to it. Don't be upset that they aren't welcoming the tattoo with open arms. Give them some time and space, and eventually, they'll understand that you are expressing yourself in one of the most beautiful ways possible.

2) To make things more understandable, try to explain to them the back story behind it.

This may or may not be in your plan, but for me, it was. The meaning behind my tattoo helped make the blow a lot easier to handle. However, maybe you want to keep the story to yourself. That is equally okay. At that point, explain to them that the tattoo holds a special significance that you, and only you, can cherish. By seeing how your face lights up in a beautiful, empowering glow, I'm sure your parents will just be glad that you are keeping yourself happy and that you've found a true expression of yourself.

3) Never stop embracing your tattoo.

Your parents might not accept the tattoo as soon as you want them to. No, this is not what you want to hear. I get it. But it's the truth. Whether they accept it or not, it will always be a part of your body from now until forever. Embrace it. It is your artwork, it is your story. However, don't shove the tattoo in their face every time you see them. Be respectful of their feelings. But by all means, if you want it shown, show it. Never let anyone take that away from you. This was your decision, and it made you happy. So allow it to continue to do that.

Honestly, everything will be alright. This will definitely be an experience you won't forget, but it has to happen eventually. Getting my tattoo was one of the best decisions I've made in college so far. I'm constantly reminded of what it stands for, and because of that, I always get a push of motivation throughout my day. It's extremely settling to know that I've told my family and that they approve.

You can do this. Be brave and be bold. Thanksgiving might be a little tense this year, but I can guarantee you, if your family loves you with all of their heart, the happiness you hold on your face will move them into an equal amount of happiness for you. I wish you all of the luck in the world, even though you might not even need it. You never know, they might fall completely in love with it the way you did.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
