So before getting into this, I'm going to put it out there: BBQ is my all-time favorite food. But I wouldn't eat BBQ at any time of day. Its accessibility is seriously lacking. For that reason, I need a food in my life that's there for me whenever I need it. A food that can give me comfort in the late hours of the night as well as fuel to start my day off right. (Ha, that rhymed.) The point is, and I think we can all agree that breakfast food is everything.
I will start with the magical properties of waffles, pancakes and french toast. Is there anything better than the light, fluffy texture of waffles with their built in syrup pockets? What about french toast? Its thick, comforting layers of breakfasty goodness make you forget you're actually just eating a glorified slice of bread. The best part about it? It has nothing to do with France. And we can't forget the rich, buttery, hearty essence of pancakes. Load it up with blueberries and douse it with syrup and I'm the happiest I'll ever be for several hours.
Next up, eggs. We need to appreciate the diverse nature of this incredible edible substance. As fellow Wheaties can attest to, without eggs, breakfast would not be worth eating. Not only can you make incredible egg dishes with them like eggs benedict, scrambles, frittatas, hashes and the ever-popular omelets, they provide structure and depth to the aforementioned waffles, french toast and pancakes. These beloved breakfast staples wouldn't even exist without eggs. For that, every breakfast lover is incredibly thankful.
What goes great with eggs? It's not sausage, ham or even steak. While those are all extremely honorable breakfast meats, there's really only one right answer here. Bacon. If you tell me you don't like bacon, I'm going to give myself short-term amnesia so I can forget I ever knew you. Not to be dramatic, but (in the style of "Parks and Recs" Chris Traeger) bacon is literally the best thing I've ever eaten. I can't even exactly tell you why I like it so much. Or maybe there are so many reasons, I don't know where to begin. Its thickish-thin consistency and the salty, greasy, smoky and overall satisfying flavor put it right up there with the food of the gods.
If I had more than 500 words, I would spend it talking about donuts, bagels and cream cheese, the diversity of toast, breakfast sandwiches - and don't even get me started on coffee and breakfast teas. From the high quality breakfast places, (special shout out to Egg Harbor Cafe in downtown Wheaton and The Beer Kitchen in Kansas City) to the simplest (i.e. McDonald's), breakfast is something special to be enjoyed regardless of where the sun is. Don't believe me? Then perhaps you'll listen to people you trust.
