Brands Are Starting To Show More Diversity

Did anyone notice anything different about this year’s Super Bowl advertisements?

Minus the comedic advertisements and amazing halftime show. If you support the current presidential proposal, this article is not for you.

More than 100 million viewers tuned in to watch the most anticipated game of the year - Super Bowl 51. Besides the outstanding performance of Lady Gaga and the overwhelming game versus the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons, a game in which I refuse to talk about. Anyone who is a fan of the New York Giants, you know actually why I don’t want to talk about it. However, there was something quite different during this year’s Super Bowl commercials.

As most Americans are aware off, President Elect Donald Trump proposed and succeed the travel ban within the 7 Middle Eastern countries. The countries are Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. To his supports, who were not “aware” of his order, the man was dead serious about his proposal about this ban. President Elect Donald Trump is keeping refugees from these 7 countries from entering the country for 120 day and immigrants from the 7 Muslim countries for 3 months. Family members who are from these countries are currently affected by this proposal. Many immigrants with dual green cards who these countries are not allowed to return to the United States within 90 days.

Thousands of people across the country have come together and protested against the president’s executive order. Foreign leaders from the 7 countries are calling this ban “insulting” and “supports the terrorists and shows divisions among people.” As a response to these protests and foreign leaders, brands used Super Bowl 51 to celebrate diversity within our country. Brands got a little more political and showed off their vision for America. Coca-Cola featured different countries singing “American the Beautiful.” As heartfelt the commercial had touched America during game night, the commercial made a statement. “Together is Beautiful” while others like our President Elect Donald Trump is trying to destroy the unity within our country.

Who else saw the Airbnb’s #weaccept commercial? Or Expedia’s commercial? “What is the key?” A question all of us are asking in this time of need. The guy, the one who looks like a wise genie, speaking in the commercial made valid points about peeking over “our neighbor’s fences.” Other commercials showed the American in varies ways, such as the Budweiser commercial showing the creator’s story to America. Airbnb’s commercial #weaccept showed half and full faces of different ethnicities of Americans. The commercial not only created the illusion we, as Americans, are accepting all but as one nation filled diversity.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
