Whether you’re a post-grad looking for a job, waiting to start your job or internship, or simply lacking a way to productively pass the time this summer, end-of-the-school-year boredom doesn’t discriminate. It can strike at any time. For me, it hit right after I finished unpacking my jam-packed suitcases. Seriously, now what? The weather fluctuates between chilly sweater weather to sweat-inducing heat within an hour. Half of my friends are either busy doing important things or are still in school, and I’m living in my parents’ house. Can't a girl get some privacy?
Regardless of your reasons for boredom, the summer months mustn’t be wasted. Here are some fantastic ideas to cure your boredom.
1. Read a damn book.
Don’t know any good ones? I do. “The Weekenders” by Mary Kay Andrews is the perfect summer read. Mystery, murder and romance. What else do you need in a book? Not really into dramatic non-fiction? “Yes Please” is Amy Poehler’s hilarious biography that you need in your life. It is surprisingly inspirational and obviously hilarious.
2. Get out on the water.
No matter where you live, I guarantee that you have the choice of a lake, ocean, river or pool to cool you off. Do something besides lay next to it please. If you’re on the sporty side, give paddle boarding a try. They’re cheap to rent, so grab some friends and give it a go. It’s a great core work out and an excellent Insta opportunity.
There are plenty of ways to enjoy the water. My personal favorite is a boat day with my friends, featuring life jacket diapers and blaring boat speakers.3. Lemme take you to the movies.
If you’ve got a hot date, might as well treat them to one of the many new summer blockbusters coming out this season. We’ve got a really solid line-up coming to you
folks, from Jojo Moyes’ book turned movie “Me Before You,” out June 3rd
(you’re going to want a tissue box) to the much awaited “Finding Nemo” Sequel,
“Finding Dory,” out on June 17th. Note: M&M's and popcorn is the best salty and sweet combo. Argue with me.
4. Become a foodie.
Step out of your comfort zone and try some new grub. Need some ideas? Follow one of the many trendy food accounts on Instagram. As a Minneapolis native, I follow accounts like @bestfoodtwincities to see which restaurants I need to venture to next. I know you’ve had your eyes on a “sushirito” or a trendy donut decorated with random toppings, from Fruit Loops to bacon. Just give it a go. Life is too short to pass up new and crazy foods.
5. Embrace nature.
I know better than anyone that shutting your door and entering the magical world of Netflix is just what the doctor ordered after a long and gruesome finals week. Although, looking outside of my bedroom window and into the great outdoors as I hear the theme song of “Parks & Recreation” begin yet again, I can’t help but feel guilty. If this sounds familiar, may I suggest tying up your fresh kicks and walking out your front door. Take your pooch to the local dog park or dust off your bike and hit up the trails. There’s a whole world out there, kiddos.
There is no official cure for summertime boredom, but I hope that these ideas spark some interests in beating this common ailment. Take advantage of your undergraduate summers. They’ll fly by before you know it. Happy summer, everyone!
