As someone who is in the middle of a Bachelor’s degree in English, I am the definitive expert on all the different kinds of books.
Oh, I’m not talking genres here, folks. No, we’re going to talk about the feelings of these tattooed trees. Here are the four basic kinds of books you’re going to come across if you love reading:
1. Plot horses
I’m talking books you can’t put down. Books that suck you in and keeping your eyes and your mind moving, page after page after page. Books where you have to cover the bottom of the page with your hand so you won’t accidentally read any spoilers. These are the books that made you stay up late reading as a child—and hopefully you’ve found some as you get older.
2. Character circuses
The most interesting things that happened in these books aren’t the things that happened in the book. No, the real adventure begins when the characters pop into your brain in your everyday life. The author has created such an interesting cast of characters that they stand in your mind like real people.
3. Waterfall reads
Whether poetry or prose—these are the books that are simply beautiful. I call them “waterfall books” because they make me feel like I’m under a waterfall of words that cover me in wonder. The plot may be a little slow, or there may not be one at all; regardless, these were the books that rainy afternoons were made for.
4. Slogs.
Look, we’re in college. And even English majors have to read things they’re not interested in. Assigned reading can be a grab-bag—sometimes you love it, sometimes you want to throw the book across the room and send the author to the guillotine. Slogs are the latter. They’re long, they’re boring, the plot is dull and the characters are slow. But it’s all good—at least once the semester ends you never have to think about it again!
