Books: Perpetually Better Than Their Movies

It is a truth universally acknowledged, so you can't argue with me on this one.

It has been a long debated topic in the film and literary industry, and I'm here today to settle this feud. Are books better than the movies based off of them?

Simple answer? Yes. Long Answer? Hell Yes. And here come my reasons...

1. Imagination

When you read a book, you have the freedom to imagine its characters a certain way, and the setting a certain way. There isn't a Hollywood budget special effects clouding your atmosphere.

There's just you, the words on the page, and how you choose to interpret them. I think such a crucial part of reading is what our mind can do from words, and the things we can think up as the authors describe it.

2. The Thoughts of a Character

This is probably my biggest movie pet-peeve, and the only way movies can truly get it right is by hiring damn good actors. The ability of a person to portray certain emotions of a complex situation on screen is truly a talent and I commend all actors out there who are stellar at it.

But, there is still no way to truly compare to the insight you get into a characters life when reading. Books tell you so much about who a person is and their motives behind doing a certain thing.

In movies, a lot a motivation is left to be debated since it's hard to get the character to talk directly to the audience without doing a cringe-inducing voice-over. The connection a reader has with a protagonist is so special and unique, and I think that bond is just so much deeper and real when the reader can freely hear that characters thoughts.

3. The will power it takes not to skip ahead

One of the biggest struggles of reading an amazing book is being able to restrain yourself from skipping ahead and reading the juicy parts.

There's something so rewarding in being able to hold yourself back, while still frantically turning pages in 1/100th of a second to find out what happens next. There's kind of a game and a reward in reading, in that readers determine how and when and where they read the story and the pace at which they choose to take it.

4. YOU CAN TAKE A BOOK ANYWHERE

Unlike movies, all a book requires is someone ready and willing to read it. A movie isn't really something you watch anywhere at any time, and it isn't socially acceptable to do so in most situations, whereas books are accepted virtually anywhere. Reading also makes you look smart, and that's always a plus.

5. The story a person creates for themselves out of a book

One super fun thing about reading is the connections you have to a book and how it affects your personal life. A lot of times, I'll be reading a book and the character is struggling with the same things I am struggling with.

Books connect you so much more personal to that and movies a lot of the time just don't have the same effect.

What you do when reading books is also a fun way to connect with a story.

For example, I drank a certain tea while reading Anna and the French Kiss, so now every time I drink that tea I get reminded of the story.

Sometimes, I read by candles and certain smells remind me of a book. Little things like that are just so interesting and unique to book-reading over movie watching

I could really go on forever, both those are probably the top five most prevalent reasons I will infinitely enjoy books more than movies.

Of course, that's my opinion, and I certainly still LOVE movies, but books will forever, and always, be number 1 in my heart.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
