If you have read "Gone Girl" or even seen the movie, you know Gillian Flynn is a genius. Or maybe absolutely disturbed. Either way, the products of her mind continue to fascinate me.
"Gone Girl" was the perfect story for those of us who are somewhat put off by the extreme sappiness that is Nicholas Sparks, yet aren't quite ready for the horror of Stephen King. While tying in an unconventional yet sexy relationship with a shocking mystery, it went from a random grab off the shelf to a favorite book. When I picked up "Sharp Objects" almost a year later when I finally had time to read again, I knew it wouldn't disappoint.
On the cover of one edition, the Chicago Tribune reviewed "Sharp Objects" saying, "keeps you reading with a pure but nasty addiction" and I couldn't agree more. Aside from "Gone Girl" and reading "The Hunger Games" series in early high school, I have never read a book that I had a harder time putting down. A psychological thriller, as it's called in many reviews, the book starts with Chicago reporter Camille Preaker being assigned to cover a potential serial murder case in her hometown. Reluctantly, she travels down to investigate and faces dark twists and turns in her investigation that hit her closer to home than anyone would have ever suspected.
The character development of Camille throughout the 254-page novel is truly unmatched. Psychology majors, mystery junkies, and just plain bookworms alike will be delighted to delve into the intricacies of her character alone, as well as the rest of the characters that appear in the novel. It is not a book to be missed.
