Dear Black Men
Kahlil Joseph & Beyonce

There exists a great divide between Black Women and Black men

And, yes, while there exists a great divide, disrespect and a stripping of voice and rights towards all women, in different areas and ways, I can most accurately describe the troubles I can clearly see by being a Black Woman and sexism affects each woman differently, depending on what race you are.

All problems are intersectional and depend on a conglomeration of social constructs.

So, let’s talk about it.

  1. Black men have no problems throwing us under the bus
  2. Black men expect us to put up with their shit.

I see this blasé attitude towards women in music ALL the time. And WAIT, before you say, ‘it’s just music’, you have to understand that

  • Media promotes, influences and mirrors specific attitudes in society.

Hell, if Red Lobster saw a dramatic increase of people going to their restaurants just by Beyoncé mentioning them in her song, then what do you think this mass message depicting girls, specifically black girls and women a “thots” “b*tchs” “hoes” or “money hungry”, “ugly” and the like.

This mess of a music also promotes colorism (it exists guys). i.e. Kodak Black’s crusty ass. Therein you cause a fetish. You are praising a black woman for having white features/ or being “passable.

Then, if you don’t listen to this music, you have certain Black people who will willingly revoke your “black card”.

From Steve Harvey telling women to “lower your laundry lists of expectations” to my friend telling me that I need to stop being picky, I have heard a multitude of people scolding Black Women to let go standards.

Standards other women in different races are able and expected to keep.

You constantly hear other women declining future partners if they cannot work with them fiscally, or not holding up to a specified expectation they have for their mates.

But, ironically, no one is bashed for being a gold digger like the Black Woman.

Ironically, because statistics show Black Women mainly pursuing higher education more out of any other group.

Ironically, because Black Woman have shown themselves capable, beautiful and breezy rising above and being self starters, all the while taking harsh criticism, hate and harm like a grain of salt.

And IRONICALLY, and also the most reliable to raise their children – mainly singlehandedly- 72% of black mothers raise their children alone.

There are so many components that I could talk about, it makes me bubble with rage and sadness all at once.

This scorn, objectification/hypersexualization, and degradation needs to be stopped.

And we should further this Womanist movement; refuse this abuse from our own men and society at large.

We need to stop offering our backs as stepping stool for unappreciative men who would rather silence us than raise us up.

I plan on talking more about this topic as it’s very dear to me, and delve in it further.

To be continued and Power up electric ladies.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
