The time has come for Spelman College to select their next Mr. Blue and White and court for the 2016-2017 school term. Mr. Blue and White serves foremost as an ambassador to Spelman College. He will be asked to represent the College to prospective students and parents as well as to donors, and external constituents. He should carry himself in a manner that would enhance the image of the College. He will be asked to collaborate in programs with Admissions and Orientation Services, Alumnae Affairs, the President's Office and other key campus offices during his reign. He should exemplify the ideals that Spelman holds dear:
a. Academic excellence;
b. Ethical leadership;
c. Appreciation of the many cultures of the world;
d. Commitment to positive social change.
One of the candidates for this year's court is Mr. Jawuan Johnson. Jawuan is a rising senior at Morehouse College who majors in Kinesiology from Chicago, Illinois. Jawuan aspires to add sports medicine into the culture of all people as he masterminds multiple ways to make physical therapy a priority in people's lives. Jawaun presently serves as the president of Top 10 AUC at Morehouse College, Community Service Organizer for the Morehouse Pre-Alumni Association, The Future Senator at Large (2016-2017) for Morehouse College Student Government Association, a Bonner Scholar, a member of Purpose Driven, and an assistant teacher with the Kindezi Charter School here in Atlanta, Georgia. Jawuan is also the founder of the first boxing club to ever be chartered at Morehouse College in the upcoming year.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Jawuan and interviewing him about his goals and aspirations as Mr. Blue and White.
When asked, What is your goal as Mr. Blue and White 2016-2017? Jawuan replied, "As Mr. Blue and White, I plan to enhance the culture of Spelman College and the relationship with the Morehouse College community. I believe there is always room for improvement in the way we interact and understand one another as sisters and brothers, and I know I have what it takes to be a positive asset and image for the student body, faculty, and staff."
I also asked Juwuan, why he wanted to be Mr. Blue and White 2016-2017? Jawuan said, "As the only boy of six, I have always had the pleasure of being around women and getting the chance to understand what it means to be a black woman in this world. I believe there is always a need to empower women and to change to the dialogue and relationships that occur between women and men."
Then Jawuan was asked: What can you provide to the college that the other candidates will not provide? Jawuan stated, "There are two things that I know I have that the others may not have and that includes experience and a true passion to help. This explains why I participate in so many activities that advocate to change the experience of all people who are disadvantaged in some form. I have had the esteemed pleasure of helping homeless women, fundraising for less fortunate families for Thanksgiving, and more."
The last question for the interview was: What is your platform? Jawuan expressed, "My platform is entitled 'Black Girls Box'. This will include using boxing to help women battle with stress or mishaps that have occurred in their life such as sexual assault and sexual violence. I desire to get women past stages where they may not be able to simply just talk through them. Boxing is a health and stress reliever that can help all."
So, do you think Jawuan Johnson has what it takes to be the next Mr. Blue and White? Find out Apr. 16, 2016, at the Chapel of Spelman College. Jawuan encourages all of his Spelman sisters to come out to see him in action and to vote for him as the next Mr. Blue and White.
