We appreciate all the holidays and birthdays that you work through. I can only imagine what it must feel like not being able to see the joy on your children’s faces on Christmas morning because you’re walking the beat somewhere in Brooklyn. Or not being able to give the love of your life his or her New Year’s kiss because you’re stuck working in Times Square. Fourth of July? Sorry, they won’t be able to make it to your barbecue because they are too busy driving around in their patrol car making sure nobody is blowing their hands off with fireworks.
We appreciate you leaving your house every morning, saying goodbye to your loved ones not knowing if that is the last time you will ever see them. Recently, there have been so many merciless killings of police officers for no reason. There truly is no telling what is going to happen while they are on their tour, so it is important for you to let them know you love them every single chance you get.
We appreciate how you push through all this negative energy that is thrown at you. Your job is to serve and protect at all costs. All the while the people you are trying to serve and protect are spitting on you, calling you horrible and obscene things and even trying to harm you. It takes a special type of human being to look past all of that and still save the lives of people that curse your name.
Our dear heroes in blue—know that we will always have your back. Despite what happens or how badly the media portrays you, we know what you stand for. We know that you will do anything to make sure civilians are safe, even if that means sacrificing yourself in the process. We stand by you.
