The holidays are a time spent with laughter, excitement, and love. Especially when it is shared with those closest to our hearts, our family. T'is the season to give hugs and spend time with each other while enjoying stories of funny, sad, or strange things that took place in the past; but why is it only for a few weeks? With Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s playing off bumper to bumper on our yearly calendar it seems that we automatically dub this “season” as the only time to spend with our relatives.
But I want this to change, I want people to feel comfortable with wanting to have their whole family together, even if it’s not exactly possible all the time. 99% of us have a portion of our family that don’t exactly live nearby, but that doesn’t mean you can’t show them you care. Even if it’s just a phone call or text message to them, letting them know you are thinking of them or miss them. Just to show them they have a place in your heart no matter how far away they are from you.
For the family members that you are lucky enough to have live within reason to you, don’t take that for granted! Make plans with them, even if it’s just a family movie night with some candy and popcorn and a funny movie; or meeting up for coffee to talk about that rough week you had or that test you aced! These will be some of the best moments you will look back on, even if you don’t realize it at that moment.
There are so many ways to spend time with your loved ones, even if it’s just your immediate family, like your parents and siblings. And you don’t always have to empty your wallet to have a good time! Activities as simple as playing a board game, window shopping, or even just eating dinner together can bring you closer.
So just because the holiday season is coming to an end, don’t let your family time end with it. These people are your blood and will have your back through whatever you go through. It’s important to show how much you mean to each other, and that no matter when it is, or what is going on your lives, you will ALWAYS have your family!
And maybe…that’s all we really need.
