I love anything that allows me to get organized, start anew, and breathe in the new smell of a textbook (I hope I am not the only one…). I think that the funny thing about fresh starts is most people don’t take advantage of them. A new year brings a clean slate full of endless potential. Like most of the people around the world, each January I convince myself I am going to do X, Y, and Z. The first few weeks I am doing just great. Marking things off my checklist left and right, going to the gym, eating right, focusing on school, and doing basically whatever my resolution for the New Year may be.
As weeks pass on, do I actually do them or do I begin to slack? You probably know the answer to this- of course, I slack. I am sure that 99.9% of you can relate to this on a personal level. I think the aspect that most people, including myself, miss is consistency. In anything you do, consistency requires unchanging effort. You have to commit yourself fully and give it all that you've got. When it comes to fresh starts, we all underestimate the value of a new day. I know this because I do it too. It never clicked until recently that I don’t have to wait for a fresh start.
You can resolute to do anything you want at any time of the year. Each new day brings a different set of challenges that can be tackled. Sometimes I have days where I go to bed upset or frustrated at whatever hand I was dealt that day, and consequently, I wake up the following morning in the same mindset. We must start to treat each day like a clean slate. If we start to think to ourselves that each day is a brand new one that has been given to us to start afresh I think our days would look a little different!
Yes, you may have a bad night, but that doesn’t mean that bad night has to affect the following day. Like my dad always told me, “an attitude is a choice.” With that being said, don’t let one thing that goes wrong in your life take a toll on what you are truly capable of doing and how you perform. Confront each day with consistency in mind.
So what that it is nearing toward February, get on with your capable self and do whatever you aim to do! Write a list of things you want to accomplish this year and make it happen! Who knows, this year could be the best year possible where you accomplish the things you have dreamt of doing.
