Blinded By City Lights

You don't have to go far to find the best illuminations in town.

You look across a major city late at night from a hill, an airplane, a tower and you see city lights.

Surprisingly, these lights have the power to make even the most polluted cities look magical. Staring at a beautifully illuminated city after a long stressful day/week/month is the best way to empty your mind and come to peace with your surroundings. Who knew that the industrial lights from supermarkets, buildings, and cars could be considered so fascinating?

Los Angeles (of course) is home to many, many locations for getting the best view of the city lights. Bt instead of going along with mainstream trend, I wanted to offer a couple options that are known more to locals and less crowded than other major tourist spots.

Fly to the Moon

Rocketship Park or Los Arboles Park located in Torrance, CA overlooks the South Bay cities. During the day it's a great spot for going on the swings or having a picnic while looking at a stunning view. But at night, the scenery makes a complete 180 and turns into a breathtaking showcase of lights. To further enhance your view, you can also climb up the famed metal rocketship that allows for viewing the lights from a different height. I often went to this spot in high school with my friends if I ever felt the need to contemplate life. For me personally, this place is of great sentimental value and I can't help but feel extremely nostalgic when I'm there. Since this park is also not as crowded or popular as others, you can essentially have it all to yourself. If you're looking for a place where you can literally fly to the moon, Rocketship is definitelly for you.

Not Bluffing

The Bluffs or Bluff Trail Park is a local gem in the small town of Westchester, CA. Not far from Loyola Marymount University and Playa Vista, this hiking spot is a popular place for many dog-walkers, hikers, and joggers during the day. But at night, it is a very quiet and secluded place perfect for enjoying the company of city lights. You can see all across LA up to the Santa Monica Mountains as well as the Hollywood sign. Because it's mainly only known by residents in the neighborhood, it is the best spot for getting away and thinking by yourself while avoiding traffic and crowds.

You don't have to go far to find the best illuminations in town.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
